Title: MK5 buying help please
Post by: Manx_GTi on 25 March 2008, 20:01
Hi All,

First post here, so firstly hi!

Until 4:30pm i had been expecting delivery of a mk5 GTI 5 door standard apart from Ipod and phone prep (£20600otr) on friday. Anyway at 9:30am i got a call from the import dealer saying what phone did i have as they were fitting the bluetooth today for me? This set of alarm bells as i thought i was getting factory fitted phone and Ipod but it turns out its all retro fitted. So after some debate i have said its not what i was expecting and have said im not happy and have walked away from that particular deal.

Now i felt that £20600 was a not bad price for a 5 door with the ipod in the centre console etc but if its all a aftermarket fit then i could have done that myself and found a standard 5 door for cheaper than £20600..

So my question is, can anyone recommend an import dealer who has been good to them and not mislead them? also do we have any real world prices for what i should expect to pay for a 5 door GTI or 5 door R32?

Ideally i was hoping to spend around £23-£25k and hopefully bag myself a standard R32 or a speced up GTi, am i living in a dream world?

PS
I have a Suzuki swift sport to trade in.. So if anyone wants a Red, sept 2007, leather, phone, audio 2 Swift sport for £10k give me a shout!

simple answer to to a reputable VW dealer and get it spec'd as you want, or buy a near new one, for the money you have and buy i high spec low mileage one like ive just done. i wont go near an importer, as for the very reason why you pulled out.

Thats a fair point, it really is, i am going to my dealer tomorrow to see what he says as he sold me my Swift in sept. Maybe he will be able to tempt me with something but i doubt it.. mainly cause of the below figures! When you see on autotrader speced up gtis with leather etc for around the £23k mark.

A 5 door Ed 30 is coming in at £23690 with only ipod and multifunction steering wheel. £22865 will get me a 5 door GTi with multifunction steering wheel, parking sensors, ipod, winterpack. I am pritty sure ill have to wait 16weeks ish for a new build too. Thing is i really dont care about the car being an import im just after as many toys as possible for the money i spend.

Hi Manx gti and welcome

A 23-25k specced up (new) R32 probably doesn't exist - a nearly new one is a different matter,
as there are plenty on the volkswagen website.

Similarly you can get cheaper GTI's than the £20600 you mentioned, but for a higher spec you would probably have to go to an internet dealer or broker.

I'd see what your dealer could do for you first. I'd go now as it is near the end of the month and deals can be done  especially if they want to make their quota of sales.

Hi Manx_GTi & welcome to the forum

Something like this for less than £20,000 on the road ?

http://www.allbrandsnew.com/search_results2.asp?sid=76257&van=C

They will also part ex.

Typical basic spec price for a new 08 reg import seems to be around £18,000 for a 5dr

Some more here :-

There's plenty of happy people with imports on here

Hi All,

Thanks for the welcome and for the links.

I have been to see my dealer and he was very helpful. I think my concerns over the spec of the import i was going to get were justified, it appears VW are now putting vienna leather in the GTis as standard! So any import bought now without leather will immediately be worth much less than the equivalent uk ordered car. Basically the residual will be rubbish!

So my hunt continues, my dealer will call me later when he has found some cars to talk to me about. Hopefully he will have some interesting ones already built so i dont have to wait 3 months for a new build. The other import dealer is still looking for me too so he ma still turn up a fully loaded one.

Will keep you posted

Main Dealer has the following waiting at port for immediate delivery.

OPTION1 IN WHITE WITH LEATHER STANDARD,IPOD & ARM REST, MONZA 2 ALLOYS,LUXURY PACK,MULTI FUNCTION HIGHLINE £22215

OPTION2 IN WHITE WITH LEATHER STANDARD, IPOD& ARM REST,PARKING SENSORS,SUNROOF,WINTER PACK £22645

OPTION3 IN RED WITH LEATHER STANDARD,MONZA2 ALLOYS,RCD500& MP3 &10 SPEAKERS £22125

OPTION4 IN RED WITH LEATHER STANDARD, MONZA2 ALLOYS,CRUISE CONTROL £22050

OPTION5 IN RED WITH LEATHER STANDARD,IPOD & ARM REST,MONZA2 ALLOYS,REAR TINTED GLASS,£22230

Importer came up with 5 door gti, black, rcd500 and 18 monzas for wait for it.. £22995 thats £450 more than buying the same spec car from VW.. infact option3 above is the same apart from colour!

Its leather being standard now thats screwing with the importers prices, initally the importer told me the above car was £24500 as list.. but then went quiet when he looked at VWs site and has not called me back.

Just waiting to see what Ed30s are at the port and what ill get for my swift from the main dealer, but at the moment its looking like ill get one via the main dealer.. probably option 2 above, although my wife has said the white may look a bit essex boy chavvy! but i think it would look great.. lol

do remember that the £450 saving from an importer, you will loose on as a trade in as its a parallel import and not a uk regestured car, and that a dealer will wanna knock you down on value of it because its an import.Thats why imported GTi 's at dealers often sell for a couple of grand less then UK sorced cars.Personally if your spending 22k on an import, then id go for a good spec'd one from a  VW dealer. There really isnt much in it with those spec's that the importer has offered. Dealers will give you discount if you haggle hard enough and play off against the offer. ive had 2 now, and got great deals twice.

The importer was actually £450 more than the dealer! But i understand what your saying, in my head i wont accept an import unless its at least £1500 less than the equivalent uk list. I have had around £650 taken on the price of a TT in the past cause it was an import so im very wary and want to make sure im not going to loose out in the end.

Ill see what the importer has to say in the morning.

I dont no what importers you're looking at with prices like that i've seen plenty with that spec for well under £20,000.When i bought mine with full spec from importer i saved £4500 compaired to local dealers,an absolute no brainer in my opinion, and regards trade in value i took the gti around a few dealers 2 weeks ago and still got offered heavy money for it.

import GTi's are worth less then uk sourced cars!!!!. theres no if's or buts, you simply WILL NEVER get as much £ back if your cars an import!. doesnt matter if its a parallel import. A good enough reason for the dealer to say..."well sorry sir, because its an imported version, i can only offer you this much"..... thats when your stomach hits the floor normally!.Whether you pay more at the start , you will see it back in trade in.Your more likely to have more joy selling an import privatley after rather then a VW dealer. But more often then not, you'll wanna use as a part ex. also you really dont know whats gonna turn up with an import. whether its been sat for 6 months in a field, like lots have reported rust or corrosion on certain parts on the engine on previous storys of buying from an importer.
I really wouldnt take the risk tbh. Its alot of money 20 odd grand to find out youve stuck it into a lemon..take this red ed 30 i nearly bought,

its had warranty claims rejected from vw uk for bad leather and soft paint on several wings, and it looks a bargain at £18995!, for a 5 door dsg, at that price ,thats why its cheap, its had 4 owners already i year of being in the uk!
think carefully :smiley:or end up with something like this...

THINGS ARE CHEAPER THEN OTHERS FOR A REASON!

I agree you might not get as much money as a uk car but its not going to be anything near the £4500 that i saved it would be more like £500,the 2 different dealers i went to offered £16,000 and £16,200 for my 56plate 3 door and i dont think there would have been much difference if it were a uk car.

the more factory fit extra's the car has also makes a big difference in trade in prices, dealers wont admit it, as its a sure way of bumping up the buying price on their forecourt.

The VW/Suzuki dealer who sold me my swift in sept 07 has offered £9500 which is £500 less than the importers so im playing the waiting game with him ;-) i cant imagine he will let me walk away over £500 at the end of the month! but stranger things have happened. IMO he must be wearing a mask to offer that price, i paid £13500 for the SSsport and its only got 2400 miles on the clock!

Had a conversation with the importer earlier, said that his car at £22995 was £870 more than buying from the main dealer, told him i would want a saving of at least £1500 over uk list but i think i would pay £21000 - £21500 for that car.

With regards to the is an import worth less debate I have traded in two audi TTs and a ML320 CDi in the past, all were imports and i got nailed about £600 on the TTs and £1000 on the ML becuase they were only UK spec not uk cars. So even though the importer is saying no it wont make a difference i know he is giving me the sales patter. It may not make a difference for him but when i want to trade the golf in at VW for a Mk6 GTi (when they finally show up) i know exactly how the conversation will go!

i doubt very much the mk 6 will be any better then the mk 5, they are only doing the mk6 because its to cut build times.... and we all know when vw cut corners  :undecided:

Yeah cutting build times and also to cut down cost of producing it... I read somewhere that the suspension has been revised to cut sorry save money. So i wonder how well the new one will handle?!

Speaking to the main dealer yesterday and he seemed to think the Scorocco is going to be using the MK6 platform when it comes out?

Hi All,

Well i have had a complete turn around and have decided against buying a VW golf completely!!

Basically the importer is unable to locate a suitable car for me at the right price, the problem is becuase VW have just made leather standard on new cars. All the importers are screwed as they have cloth interior cars that they can no longer say are full UK spec and the suppliers are still being cheeky and trying to recoup money spent on cars with leather! if that makes sense.

My VW dealer made a good offer on my trade in but it was £500 less than i wanted so i took a drive around some more dealers and found myself at the Subaru show room looking at a black WRX.. The boot is smaller than the golf v but other than that the standard spec is superb.

Before long i was driving the WRX thinking this is nice, i bet the STi version will be the dog danglies!! This was Saturday afternoon so we were unable to speak to Subaru. The dealer called Subaru HQ this morning and managed to track down the last physical WRX STi in the county, apparently its a cancelled order, the intended buyer told his supplier to stick it up thier bum hole as it was 3 weeks late. Its WR blue which was my second choice as its a bit bling/boyracery looking but it was that or wait for nearly 4 months for a Dark grey/black one! Bring on the 300bhp in two weeks time, my mate thinks im going through a mid life crisis but when i pointed out that it was only 2k more than a Ed 30 and just as practical (if not more so due to where i live) with 70bhp more he soon saw the appeal.

So thats that really.. thanks for all your advice over the last few weeks ill still stick around and contribute to the mark1 section as it will be a very sorry day before i sell my mars red Campaign!

hope youve made the right decision and not regret it later.New shape WRX or STI not as good as its predesessor. Remember one thing, if you see a GTi in any gize come up behind you at speed, just move over and let him pass!! ( as in fifth gears TV shootout)!. good luck  and hope youve have been really sold one with the STI badge on the back!, if not move over !
