if its conking out when you put the clutch down, its most likely sucking in false air around the cam cover. You say you removed the oil breather?, is there a nice tight seal when you put it back ? if not try putting it back on tight or go to GSF and get a cam cover bung and replace it.

sounds like something else you had jaared in the process.
Look at some of the guides on rough idle or MKII maintance sections check afew things out like plugs to sensors, but sounds like a timing issue?

Do you mean that when you change down and allow the revs to drop it roars like a fatherless son then backs down and then settles to idle? Having gone thru all the tuning guides i`m at this point and am fairly confident its the isv giving up i`m afraid.

when starting off 1st gear it splutters between 1-21/2 thousand revs then when you put the foot down
it takes off change to 2nd same thing happens again
