Title: oil leaking out of mid air
Post by: slowgti on 24 March 2008, 05:30
i dont think the gti likes me very much. i just fixed my cooling system (the radiator cap wasnt sealing, complicated fixing procedure followed) anyway yea it was running nice and mint for about 2 days, i even had all the seats full with people and it still pulled reasonably well.. but then it started leaking oil. it appears to be coming from the oil cooler->engine block connection area, but ive taken it off and done the gasket, which didnt fix it. so i put the old gasket back on with some gasket paper with it as well as liquid gasket. still didnt work. all surfaces involved are smooth and look like they seal well. it only leaks when its running. last resort is ill take it off and get dad to machine an o-ring groove in to it. any ideas? could there be a small fracture that its getting forced out of? when i fix this, whats next in line so break? its a 1984 8v k-jet.

there it is. on the engine. you can see the area in question behind the dipstick.

thanks, Evan.

i spent days building up an engine with a lower milage pb bottom end. started it and it absolutely p~ssed oil out from the oil cooler to block flange. got it machined flat, new seals and gasketts from vag, proper sealant, and it still leaked. far too mush to drive it. solution? new block.no one can figure out why. remember the oil has come straight from the pump and so is at its highest pressure
ps. get a new dipstcik cover, it will be leaking and give poor running. £2 off e bay!

Unless the everything is dead flat you will always get a uneven surface don't care if its been machined it sits at an angle which means the surface might not or should be uneven at an angle.
The only way I can see you getting it sorted is possibly getting a copper gasket plate. Due to copper bring soft enough to mold around both the oil cooler and block surface. The trick is to get it really tight and when driven for a while i.e really hot tighten it some more so the copper gets softer and seats much better? All it takes is a few microns in width and it will piss oil out. Thats why we use copper washers on oil lines to stop leaks.
