Title: conical air filter
Post by: 2pac on 23 March 2008, 07:59
hi
on my 1.6 driver i am going to build a wall around the airbox intake, to keep the air cold (i don't have the pipe attached to the wing).
after that, is it a good idea to fit a conical air filter to the intake?

imo i think its better to leave it as it is. vw did it for a reason.

some carb models when air is to cold freezes the petrol could cause you more problems while cold weather is here

Carb freezing can be a problem, I would just put a K&N element in it, that would be fine

you mean that the carb may freeze because i'll have to cancell the hot air intake from the exhaust manifold? well, i live in a warm zone, and my hot air intake is not connected for years, and i never had any problems.
so without the freezing risk, will a conical element give any benefit?

No.

and you cant fit one to the end of the driver airbox anyway, it will be before the warm air feed resulting in unfuiltered air being sucked into the engine from around the exhaust manifold.

but the warm air hose doesn't exist in my car, and the flap is always closed.
i get only cold air.

well fix that, otherwise the car will stall in cold/wet weather.  when the warm air flap is working properly it actually closes on full throttle, VW knew what they were doing ;)

it's been like that for years, never had problems. my manifold preheater also does'nt work
on cold weather i just pull the choke as much as it takes (weber).

you must be one of the lucky ones!  well as said, putting on a cone filter wont do anything for performance, the oem filters actually flow excellently and filter better than the so called 'performance' filters.  plus putting a cone filter on a driver just looks silly
