Title: Wheel arch build
Post by: Hurdy on 22 March 2008, 18:29
Well, after hours messing about in the garage I've finally finished the wheel arch sub box. Sounds good as well

I was fed up of having a sub box bouncing about in the back of the car and having no room to put stuff, so I went to my local audio fitter who wanted my left arm and right leg to build a custom fibre glass build into the wheel arch. Although I could have coughed up I thought it was an ideal project for me to get stuck into and now I'm glad I did. I've taken dozens of photo's as I know that some will want to have a go themselves, but I'll put that in my project thread (when I have a spare couple of hours )

Here are a couple of pics of the finished build - let me know what you think!

How much weight does it add? (For the Amp, Sub and box).

Now don't get me wrong, I know nowt about this sorta thing, but fibreglass seems like a lot of trouble ?
Why not 12mm MDF or summat ?

Probably because MDF is the spawn of Satan and all remaining stocks of it should be burned. Just my opinion

12.2 kg added. When I had the MDF box sitting in the middle of my boot  it was 14.7kg.

MDF would have been a little easier, but wouldn't have fitted as well in the arch, would have had to stick out further from the arch to get the volume and would have weighed more. :nerd:

So the reason in buying the c/f bonnet was to offset the adit weight from the ice install lol.
blends in well though.

nice work :)

how you get to the spare wheel?

The arch box is fastened in with velcro and so simply pulls out and then you can lift the boot floor cover as normal. In the near future I'll be taking out the original cover and replacing it with a narrower one which means I don't have to take out the box first.
