The infamous 8v second gear synchro syndrome. Its the synchro itself. The cure is to replace it although new gearbox oil *might* help.

yes only when its cold or hard of the line after 10 mins or so its okay its quite comman with golfs but no one seems to know why  dont know if it might have something to do with the oil or something but i do know its driving me nuts...

2nd gear crunch, do a search and you'll find its quite common, if the symptoms are the same as yours.

If you know a bit about gearboxes, its the syncro that has worn and as Alpinehead said correctly you can hear it when cold more as the gearbox oil is cold. When the gearbox oil warms up, it helps.

To fix this you can try changing the gearbox oil to Redline MTL or if the problem is quite bad you may need a new box. Don't change between first and second gear too hard and it should be ok for some time

*brynmk2 beat me to it!*

Mine is the same in 2nd gear , if you dont slam it into gear its ok , then after 10 mins or so its all good .... The joys of owning a mk2 !

I had this problem with my first Golf and as said just change the gearbox oil (every 2 years) and dont be too harsh with the gear changes, I had the car for almost 5 years and it didnt ever seem to get any worse than it was when I bought it.

Thanx for the input lads but ive sorted it i bumped into an old geezer with a mark2 gti at my local scrappy he look a weighted gear link out of a mk3 and said here pop that in ya pocket.......easy to fit just take out 2 clips with some long nose pliers and out it pops works like a charm now.....

while i was there hed noticed my revs were a bit high when idaling which was true they were way to high 1500rpm to 2000rpm so he whiped a new idle control valve (i think thats what its called it sits just above the rocker cover) out of an audi 80 now it sits pretty just below 1000rpm...so thanks AL nice 1

Can anyone recommend a place to buy the Redline MTL?

I just haven't seen it anywhere locally and want to change mine.

Definately the synchromesh... a common fault in mk2 because we luv to thrash dem in 2nd gear!!! Pick up another gearbox from a scrappy but sometimes you don't know what you're gettin. Or get it rebuilt... i got mine done for £250... pulls so much better.
