Title: Think I have found the problem with my heater matrix...
Post by: Andy Jeffries on 22 March 2008, 15:43
Okies...everyone look at this pic please...

Look at the valve thing to the left of the pipe that goes into the matrix...the water enters this valve hot but does not get through to the actual matrix..and the exit pipe - right one - is totaly empty so I think thats where my issue is..

so..what is this valve...what does it do..and where can i buy a replacement and what the hell am i asking for!?

cheers all!!

when it heats up from the water it should open and allow hot water to pass through. The valves knackered, either replace it or stick a straight through bit of pipe in it. Its just there to allow the engine to warm up quicker iirc?

Its called the Heater Matrix By-Pass valve. It was a recall part for Mk2's to stop the heater matrix blowing hot coolant on the passenger's legs.

You could try VW themselves or check a scrappy

what im gona try is put a t piece in to see it the matrix works (just had a genuine vag one put in, silly me should have asked for a mk3 one!) then if it works try and get the part :)

well, it works with a t piece in so I now have to find a bypass valve...

So nice to finally have heat :)

i changed my matrix today, im putting A G60 into mine so the bay is empty at the moment, thinking about getting some copper pipes to replace these valves, is there anywhere to remove the valve inside and retain the plastic tubing?

will investigate abit more tomorrow althought getting the engine in takes priority.

get a mk3 matrix and then you dont need the bypass valves.

ive put a mk3 one in mine, is it just a case of removing the valve and putting some pipe in its place?

I could be wrong but I thought that places like GSF stopped selling the MK2 matrix and just sold the stronger MK3 part instead ?

I replaced my valve with copper pipe mod back in September, lovely hot air all winter and no blown matrix !!

I just bought the two hoses from GSF (£20 the pair) and fitted them, no copper pipe, no bypass valve.

GSF trade on ebay using a different name, and sell a matrix advertised for all mk2s and mk3s, about £30/£35 i think

this is what i have.

i also got a complete water hose kit from "tierod69" (who sells a LOT of vw stuff, recommend them to anyone), about £35 iirc. as posted above ignores the bypass valves.

Just to add some facts
The heater by pass valve was a safety recall where in the old days the old heater matrix’s' were bad and made from cheap metal parts. These old matrix's could only handle a certain Psi of pressure i.e. boiling water. So loads of people ended up with boiling water down there feet. No the by pass valve is exactly what it said on the tin a valve that stops the foot well from flooding with hot water.
The bit VAG does not tell you is that the modern MKIII heater Matrix (same design, fit) is made much better and less likely to explode might leak, but will not explode! Which means you don’t need the bypass valve anymore?
So save some money and just have a through pipe minus the bypass saves loads of grief.
They stop making the bypass valve the last time I checked I know some people use other valves as a cheaper source.
