Title: what do ya recon...
Post by: Alpinehead on 22 March 2008, 12:27
driving to ipswitch yesterday and it started pissing down.  put me foot down to overtake and it miss fired. could not go over 60.  so i stopped at the services, popped me bonnet and the car conked out.

dryed the ht leads, dizzy, etc. all good. drove off, all seemed well. it stopped raining and the car was fine. until it rained again!  the car has never given me this problem so why would it start doing it all of a suddon??

any info would be good as im still in ipswitch and its pissing down still!! would be cool to rectify this prob b4 i drive bk 2 london again!!

cheers

yeh i have had this problem , sometimes the little scuttle panel above the ecu lets water onto the ecu plug, if its digi obv, take a look at that and if not i will have to have a harder think lol but thats what springs to mind!

could just put a towel over the ecu to keep that dry for the mean while..

HT leads as they get older becomer porous, and arc across each other during damp conditions. Check out the HT leads first and also check out the dizzy cap and rotor arm for condition too.

also water entering the fusebox, if the ecu ara is damp this is directly above the fusebox.
I had water in mine and my indicators went nuts!!!

Might be worth checking the screen seal, I had to have the screen on my fisrt Golf re-seal'd as it was letting water in both sides and as said if it gets into the fuse box it can cause big probs.

They're available new from VW, about £20 if I recall.

Yes and they're the hard plastic type, not the flimsy versions.

PM 'caddy vantastic' on here, and he'll give you an updated price and availability

there are 2 halves to the covers:

192 819 415 C - main cover - 21.62+VAT
192 905 399 A - ecu cover - 5.77+VAT

Check your drain holes arn't blocked, and remove the ECU and check the connections on the plug for cossosion & damp.  The plug should be watertight, try smearing a bit of vaseline on the rubber seal before you plug it back in!

I'd also give it a full service, starting with the dizzy cap & rotor arm.  Dirt cheap from

Your ECU should have a plastic cover over it followed by the scuttle tray. Spray WD40 on all the electrical/ignition components to displace the water and it should be fine.

Check the drain hole under the scuttle to make sure thay aren't clogged up so you don't get standing water around the ECU.
