Ordered some water outlet plastic flange thingies for the head on my 8v gti. All as part of my resto project. All was going swimmingly until one of the bolts snapped and I'm now left with a 3mm protrusion and no way of removing it!! Any suggestions gladly welcomed. It's the lower bolt on the right hand side of the head that holds on the plastic water outlet. As such I have limited access and really don't want to have to remove the head.

Just to add I've tried mole grips, but they aren't working.

Can you get an angle grinder in (or a dremel)? If so, get a very thin disc and cut a slot in the stud, then use a slot head screw driver. Alternatively your looking at drilling/an easy-out thingy.

Yeah I'm going to try a dremmel tomorrow. Sadly if that doesn't work I'll have to get the head off as there is no room to drill out the bolt.

nah so do 16v, vr6, 1.8t v5...forums are littered with dubbers have probs and then solving em :grin:

dremel did nothing but infuriate me further. I cut a slot inserted a suitable screw driver and proceeded to snap what little bit was protruding from the head cleanly off. I am now considering my options. The engine itself in rude health, but I was considering swapping it at some point for something more fruity. I may bring these plans forward now.

Well I called my tame mechanic and he promptly had the car uplifted on a flatbed, delivered to his garage and got cracking on the car. He called me to advise it was ready for collection the same day. I picked it up and asked what I owed him. His reply was "get me a beer next time you're in the pub"! Now that really is EXCELLENT service!!!
