You need to go into device manager in control panel. In the list you'll see the USB lead listed as a virtual serial device. Go into the properties of it and change the COM port to COM3. You may need to restart after. When it's restarted then open vag com and set the usb lead to run from COM3. Although the lead is USB, the drivers make the laptop recognise it as a serial cable hence listing it as a virtual serial device.

Good stuff, the only ones you can scan are engine, ABS and airbag so don't bother trying the rest :P

This post has to be made a sticky.

For Novice's like myself, its great.

I thought Vagcom was really expensive.

I'm thinking on getting it.  It'll be cheap to buy, but it'll show all the faults which will cost $$$ to sort!

Not necessarily. You've already saved yourself an initial £50 diagnostic scan from a garage. Some things can be fixed yourself so you don't need to pay labour. If you're not scared of getting hold of a spanner, get yourself a haynes and people on here can talk you through how to fix anything

Right - just bought it off the bay and plugged it into the pc/car but can't seem to get anything to work.

Going to have a dig around the little cd i got with it, but does anyone have an idiots plan on how to get it working?

What's the error message you get? There should be a file on the driver disc that explains how to set up the com ports if that's your problem, check the previous page on this post for a brief description on how to do it
