Title: tinted windows on mk 5 gti
Post by: lionel on 19 March 2008, 20:29
hi guys

new to this forum.  really need help.  My gti windscreen was replaced yesterday looks like it is a totally different one, not as dark and no shading across the top.  windscreen company are basically saying that i am dreaming, the gti does not have tinting and no shading across the top.  beginning to doubt myself now.

any advice

thanks

lionel

take the car into dealers for them to check the screen and the tint. If it isnt like it should be then get them to write it on some headed paper and take that to your windscreen installer.

The GTI changed from blue tinted glass to green tinted glass.  Can't remember the year of change.  You should insist that you get the same colour windscreen.

Standard golfs have green tints all round, the gti's and r32's have blue tints up until the latest update MY08 i think.  They now all have the green tints

Here's a pic which shows the blue tint on mine fairly clearly??

and without the awful pink gti clusters

so am i in trouble regarding getting a blue tinted w/s so?  Is the green one all that is available?  My car will look all out of sync if there are two different tints?  What is really annoying me is that the window suppliers are trying to tell me that the non tinted version that they have installed is the only one available and that there is no such thing as a tinted window for the gti??  I also have no shading on the top which i definately did have prior to this.  makes me sick

dont worry, both colours are easily available its just because green is more mass produced, it cheaper to put on the cars and with vw's challenge to make the golf git cheaper to make, its things like this that have been removed.

Don't think shaded windscreen was an option in the UK.  Could have been aftermarket job if you bought the GTI used.

My GTI is a 2007 model year (56 plate) and has green tints, not blue.

Lionel, what year is your GTI? As others have said, the first of the MKV GTI's had a fairly obvious blue tint,  but they changed it from mid 2006, so that now the windscreen and windows are the same tint as every other Golf (green-ish).

When I had to have my windscreen replaced , I phoned the claims line and they new what type screen was fitted from my registration number. As it was a  blue tint I didn't want the green fitted.
Autoglass did the job fine - although i played f*** with them for taking it out for a test drive!!!!!!

Sorry to go off topic but maxamus, I notice you have had your car colour coded.  Any chance you have some closish pics from the rear?  Also a few questions

Are you glad you had it done?
Did you buy the primed r32 skirts or were all the plastics flattened and painted?
Are they wearing ok, i.e stone chips etc
And if you dont mind me asking, how much did it cost??

Its something i've been toying with for over 2 years now and having now decided the gti is staying a couple more years, i feel like spending some money on it.  Colour coding, remap and possibly putting the ed30 rear valance on are all tempting options

well went to local dealer today he confirmed that the w/s is not vw .  explained that some of the gtis came out with the top tint (like mine) but hard to prove to autoglass.  mine is 2005.

really want my old w/s back.  sick of this crap

1. Yes i am glad i had it done. Best thing i have had done to improve the look of the GTI. Car now looks more sportier and makes it look as if its got a bodykit. Light reflects more now aswell due to the paint work extending all the way.
2. The existing plastic bumpers/panels were flattened and primed and then painted.
3. Wearing just fine. No stone chips yet and paint still in immaculate condition.
4. Getting the front chin spoiler, rear valance, 2 side skirts and wing mirrors done cost me £450

If your going to get your gti colourcoded then make sure you change the lights for the R32 smoked ones!
