Thinkin of cleaning up the lines on the rear of my 1990 16v by removing the rear wiper and rear washer jet but wanted to know if this would be an mot fail and also if its a requirement by law? It will probably fail anyway as its got no side repeaters but just wanted to know!! :)
-
ive been told that the rear wiper/washer does not fail the MOT.
Some cars dont have the rear wash/wipe anyway
-
Ive removed n smoothed the rear was wipe an it passed the mot, the rear screen does tend to get covered in crap alot though an yah cant see out of it! looks good though
im a newb by the way, hi!
-
cheers guys-yeah realised it will get covered in crap, will av to get the missus to get out and clean it on long journeys!!!! ;)
-
if it's dirty then wash the f**king thing! ;D
I'm smoothing mine off soon.
-
I havent got a rear wiper on mine. I took mine off soon after I got the car so i dont really notice not having it. Although I never really look out of the rear window anyway. Just use my side mirrors mainly. Prob something to do with my 1st car not having a rear view mirror at all ::)
-
Its not part of MOT, and neither is having side repeaters. People think it is, but they're wrong. If you do get failed for not having them, then the garage is in the wrong.
-
with the repeaters isn't it a case of 'if they are fitted- they have to work'. therefore if removed and the holes filled or capped (with those supercool 'gti' inserts) the tester is none the wiser.
I don't think the rear wash/wipe has ever been part of the test though.
-
^^ knowing our luck with government laws these days it probably will be needed for the MOT soon :P
-
I read a MOT website that sayed you had to have them, However i just go to a local garage that tunes modified cars and slip an extra tenner and wink as i pay ;) They tell me anything thats wrong with the car, But i always pass no matter what.
-
I've asked policemen, and MOT testers if its part of the test and they have all said it isn't. All it is is a safety thing, if you have the sort of accident where someone cant see your side indicators because you've removed them, then it might be not good!!
-
The other day I had a thought, how hard would it be to mod the 90 spec side skirts to turn the GTI badge hole into a set of side repeaters? Attach a pair of smoked side repeaters, run some wires out of one of the fixing holes and jobs a goodun!
I don't know if there would be enough room to use bulbs, probably better to use a load of high powered LEDs.

Urgh don't even joke about that :)
