Title: mk2 gti 16v or bmw 318is coupe ??
Post by: matg340 on 18 March 2008, 10:37
Folks ive sold my mk2 (1.6) an lookin for somethin to replace ! Obviously a bit biased on here but what would you guys go for ? a mk2 16valve or a 318,is coupe think they are roughly about the same power !Takin into concideration reliability , runnin cost also which would be better between an 8 or 16 v ?  just after some other peoples thoughts :)

Dub will be quicker as the beemers are not as quick as you would think (Is it an E30?). That said the beemer is RWD so you can get your drifto on. Hoarses for courses really, I like the looks of older BM's and nearly bought an E30 325i Sport a while back but the fuel consumption put me off. Glad I went for a Golf in the end.

i expect you will get some biased views!

think about power to weight, golf will be more nimble too i should think. however i'd quite fancy an old skool ghetto 3 series (but a 325i or something)

8v/16v - well 8v's are better on fuel and i'd imagine a bit more forgiving for town driving. but i havent driven a 16v

Kinda what i was thinking really golf would be loads more fun ! was an e36 i was lookin at but now ive come across a 16v down the road from me for 600 ono ! doesnt look too bad in the pics but then they never do !!

Think im gonna get another golf but cant make my mind up between 8 or 16v ?? What do you reckon folks ?

Is there really much difference between the two ?

16v will be quicker but use more fuel. also liable to be more expensive (read overpriced!).

however that said a 16v will probably hold its value more if its a good example.

later 16v's came with bigger front brakes.

thats about it.

buy the beemer. i would.

....oooo who am i kidding! buy a golf! get either a 16v or 8v, whichever one has the best bodywork(i.e. lack of rust)

both have their bonuses, 16v great for motorways and fast overall speed, 8v good for town and beating all those scooters off the line. both reletivly cheap to fix, and spares are readily available, although 8v spares seem to be more frequently available. but having said that, you see alot mroe 16v engines up for sale as a complete lump... so good arguments for both sides really.

like i say, make sure its a solid example.

i own an 8v golf mk2. but i also own a 20v mk2 golf. and have driven 16v's. buy a fiat.

Like you say, similar power and similar power delivery. Both a lot of fun, BMW rear drive is interesting on a damp road if you're not used to it. Both have huge followings and spares are readily available. The 318iS is much sought after (as are all Golfs of course!) so beware anything that looks too good to be true.

If forced to choose one over the other I'd go for the Golf as the interiors are much harder wearing - but I'd love to have a nice example of each on my drive!

Cheers for the info folks :) think its gonna be an 8v as the 16,s sound thirsty an to be honest its very rare i use the motorways ! Do alot of town drivin though so quick off the mark is what im after !

Plus only really got a budget of about £1500 which hopefully will get me a clean one :)

Nice one folks

My Mrs used to have a e36 318is coupe befor she got her Mk4 V5 it was a nice car never broke apart from natural wear and tear stuff but to me it felt a little under powered but it handled really well a 16v would leave it for dust. And anyway E36s are getting a bit chav now id go for a nice 16v any day, in black with some Brock B1s and single smoked crosshairs and coilovers blaa blaa blaa blaa blaa

Gut instinct tells me the 3 series would be a lot pricier to maintain, and as for 16v v 8v, it has been thoroughly covered here:  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=7750.0   (57 pages for you to read there matey!)

i had a 8v in bbm a couple of years ago, i loved it same spec as the 16v (ish) but i just loved the way it pulled in second gear, they go like a train! i have also heard the 16v is prone to going bang so i would not have one, plus i heard you are supposed to run valvers only on 95 octane fuel? im not exactly sure if this is true but if so its going to bump up your running costs plus insurance is higher. try and go for something fairly orignal if you can and a later model with p.a.s. as ones with no p.a.s are quite heavy. my golf had 170k on it before it died and that was only cause the previous owner had run it with no water in the system! if you look after the motor it will go until you get sick of the car, build quality is excellent and at least its not a ford! good luck whatever you do.

my daily is on 233k and is going strong (a good testiment to the engineering!).

iirc the 16v GTI's are meant to run on 98ron premium unleaded (95ron is normal unleaded), same as the 8v's
