Title: K-jet or Ke-jet. Should I change?
Post by: GIV on 18 March 2008, 00:00
Now in the right place (sorry about that)... :embarassed:

I've just joined, and I have a question for you guys.

I own a mk2 Golf GTI 16v. It was an original PL engine with cat (Ke-Jet). The engine was swapped for a KR by the previous owner but that was the only thing he changed, so now Im running a KR engine with a Ke-Jet.

Already removed the cat (lambda still in), but I need some advice.
The car is running good, top speed bit low when comparing to what I hear from other GTI owners. Apart from that and a small idle issue, the car is running good.

Bottom question is, should I change back to k-jet? Will this bring any advantage?

Thanks for the help

Technically the KE-Jet should run better, with the electronic control on the lambda, but it's a hybrid electo-mechanical system, which is a massive compromise, unlike the K-Jet, which is a nice, simple mechanical system.  If I were you I'd bin the KE-Jet and fit an original KR K-Jet system.  KE has a reputation for being difficult.  You may need to check whether you need to swap out the fuel pump for a K-Jet one, too.

That's probably because there is a lot of bullsh!t involved when some people talk about top speed

no need to change the fuel pump :)

K-jet is a better and simpler system. Ke-jet used to cause lots of problems in mk1's and early mk2's. if you can then change to k-jet. Also the top speed depends on the size of your airbox and inlet manifold. the earlier golfs had a smaller/skinnier airbox and a 42mm inlet instead of the 50mm in later models.

Do one thing at a time... you'll notice the difference each time.  :smug:

top speed relies more on the wheel size & gearing really!

That too... but airflow wise it makes a difference!

the inlet does yeah, but I doubt the airbox really makes a massive difference either way!

Is it? I thought ke is what is used when there is a cat

yes thats what it was made for, in the uk we didnt get it but in euroland it was quite popular.

I changed the airbox in my mates 1989 valver from a small one to the later bigger one and it did make a noticable difference. However the 42mm inlet manifold does restrict the airflow hence a 50mm is a must in combination with the box.

Thanks for all the answers.

The 50mm inlet manifold is already bought. Im going to pick it up tomorrow.  :smug:

I did not know that there are different air boxes on the GTI 16v. Here's a pic of my engine bay (taken by the previous owner. It looks much better now). Can you tell me if this is the large air box?
