According to 5th gear YES, by 2 whole seconds!
Imagine if it had been the ed30, totally ass kicking!

Was just waiting for this to go up!!
-
....Nick, I'm getting worried about you - You're either stuck in the Mk5 maze or waiting for an opportunity to steal one
I saw the Fifth Gear prog and was very suprised that a standard GTI beat the WRX and also by as much as it did!
-
Which episode was that then? I take it it was tonights. Will watch it later.
-
Must have been dry then?
-
Looked damp actually

well well well........ subaru wrx got absolutly trounced. By the margin that the GTi beat it by, im sure that its running more then 197bhp to match the 230 4wd that the impreza has on tap. Imagine with DSG would of knocked a further second of the 1.28 sec lap . Goes to show and take note ALL, its not the ammount of horsepower a car has, its the chassis that makes a car with the right ammount of power to go fast AROUND A TRACK. The ed30 i really think would of beaten the GTi but only slightly, as the handling in the normal GTi is slightly more agile then the ed30. Im sticking to that theory!!! .

I support all MKs of GTi (even MKIII's at a push!) robin but I do have o say the MKV is the first one I have wanted to buy new since the MKII.

its been mentioned in many Car mags, the handling slightly suffers in the ed30. Hasnt got the straight line speed (normal GTi over ED30) but as Henderson says, its way more nimble and having extra horsepower doesnt neccesarly make it quicker round a track
-
i watched it aswell and i love my GTI even more lol
Bit surprising though
Im thinking now how much im gonna love it even more so when i get it dropped, lighter alloys and some engine mods :smug:

I can only speak from experience, having owned both std gti and now ed30 and having covered 12k miles since October 2007 to date in the ed30 that the std is defo not more agile and no I'm not being mine is better than yours, just stating my own experiences. I have found both cars chassis to be thoroughly fanbloodytastic!

I'll have to give you a ride in my Mk5, Nick - Just ask me next time we meet

For those (like me!) who missed it. Good old YouTube!

For some reason i quite like the look of the new subaru impreza but it would deffinatley have to be a WRX STI....not just the WRX...that ofcourse if i had to choose...i think il stick with VW and my soon to come R32 for now
-
i think the new impreza is f000kin mingin, older shapes were so much nicer but are abit chav now. as for the handeling between the ed30 and std gti i thought they had the same setup?? same brakes same shoks and springs same arb's same weight (pritty much) same siza wheels so why would one out perform the other around corners?? std of course.
-
The best thing about the Scooby WRX is that you could in theory beat it in an astra van!!
They only have a top speed of about 120mph... after that its goodbyeeeeee
Should be a breeze in the R32 anyway, so I am defo looking forward to that
-
i wonder whats being said on the subaru owners club. , would be interesting to see what they think!
-
I don't believe a standard GTi is better at going round corners than the Ed30, but I do think the Ed30 could be improved on with the bigger brakes from the Leon Cupra and bigger intercooler from the S3.
I wonder how the new Impreza STi would fair round the same track as the Edition 30? One would have to assume that they would be closer time wise with the bigger bhp differential, the STi's bigger brakes etc.

'it was the driver' 'the engine wasn't run-in' 'rolling starts were at different speeds'
Would we be making the same excuses? probably not.. wouldn't be as embarassing for a scooby to mince a GTI on a track.
-
....    - Good find, Nick! Some of their comments are very funny.
-
Love that link Nick
I have to hand it to the scooby boys....they know when they've been beaten
I must admit the result suprised me.....in a really, reallly good , smug way that warmed the cockles of me heart  :smug:
-
well found nick!!, i thought somewhere in the subaru camp, there would be unrest!!!
-
A White, bog standard GTi..Now where have I seen one of those...
Probably gonna have the sulking scooby drivers climbing all over my ass now here in Donny..

I can't help but think this is down to the new WRX being a far lesser car than it's predecessor. I had an 54 plate WRX for 18 months prior to my A4 for two years, prior to my new 08 GTI. That WRX was a great car. Very fast. Effortlessly so. But it felt amazing through corners. The new lardy WRX is supposed to be far inferior, so it's no surprise to see it easily beaten by a GTI. On the road, I don't think there's a massive difference (in the dry at least) between the GTI and the old WRX. On the track, I imagine it'd be pretty close too. But I don't think it's a great claim to fame to be raving about beating the new WRX. It's got 10% more power, but lesser handling, would you really expect it to be any other way. Maybe someplace where the WRX could stretch it's legs more.
-
I think that 5th Gear have been nice to the WRX. In all honesty, if you were looking at a new hatch and wanted either the Golf or the Impreza you would almost definatly go with the ED30, that would probably stick another second on the lap time realy sticking the fingers up in the face of the 'Impreza enthustast'
-
Quality link there!!! My favourite quote from there has to be...
"Yes, there really are people out there that prefer a car to be comfortable and will be much happier with a WRX than a Golf GTI even if its a little slower round a track!"
WTF!!

That would hardly be a fair comparison. The ED30 would be a fair bit more expensive than the WRX. If you're looking at an ED30, your not far off the price of an STi. The comparison was fair, the new Impreza just isn't the car it was.
If I didn't have to worry about fuel costs, insurance, and a practical family car, I'd have gone for a last gen Impreza WRX STi over my GTi to be honest. I love my GTI, but the last gen Impreza, despite it's sh!tty interior, was an awesome car.

Hehe. I guess it depends on what they mean by comfort. Certainly, my last WRX was a grim looking space in comparison to the GTI. Very grim. In terms of creature comforts and stylish interior design, it was cheap, plastic, and very 80s. On the other hand, the GTI suspension is utterly brutal by comparison, and in wet weather, no other car makes you feel as relaxed and confident as the last gen Subaru. In the wet, at speed, I usually feel a little nervous and white knuckled, not so in the Impreza. Differing perceptions on comfort.
-
I just think the WRX will/has become a bit of a grandads car (no offence RR or Hurdy ) with its nice soft ride and the security of the AWD.
The Gti is obviously set up to be a little more sporty.. but has by no means a harsh ride. The R32 is quite similar in that sense to the WRX. i.e. AWD and slightly more forgiving suspension (thats where it stops). Its very hard to have a very quick hot hatch and good ride quality.. something has to give somewhere. It was the ride of the R32 that drew me to it more than anything (ok apart from the noise) It will match if not beat most host hatches when required and you can make good progress with out having worry about poor road surfaces which are becoming very common!!!
-
this has to be my favorite quote from their forums!!........ brings a tear to his eye!................
"quote"
but its a sad day when a golf wipes the floor with a WRX. I know my blob eye WRX is PPP'd, but I've never looked in my mirror and thought "better pull over there's a Golf behind me".
hehehe, i bet hes on the look out for one right now!
-
How much quicker do you think the STi might be over the WRX?
Have to say I don't rate VBH at all as a presenter, driver, looker etc etc. Pretty sure these "shoot outs" are a lot more subjective than they appear.
Nonetheless, it was good to see the GTi beat the Impreza! One would have to wonder how an Ed30 would fair against an STi.
-
Mind you the track was wet in places. SO the 4X4 argument didn't stand there.
Great show for the GTI though
-
i wish someone would find a lap time of... or does anyone know where this may of been test in maybe VW mag??
1. GTi manual v Ed 30 manual
2. GTi DSG v Ed30 DSG
around the same track and compare how they would fair. i really dont think theres much in it at all, bearing in mind the ED30 wont be able to hit its highest speed to get a better advantage. It would be a good test to whether a car with more horsepower and same suspention etc could get round any better then whats already be proven with a GTi 200hp version. it showed that the subaru hit 120mph at one point and the GTi was slower yet still finished ahead.thats what im trying to get at. Having the extra hp doesnt necessarly mean its quicker getting round a test track.

Who cares. I'm not bothered they are both great cars.

well i agree with your 2nd statement tag..... but its purley for curiousity

Would be nice to know.. with a R32 thrown in for good measure too of course

I wondered when someone would ask this
GTI manual - 1min 33.7 secs
ED30 manual - 1min 32.6 secs
R32 - 1min 30.4 secs
W12 - 1min 29.4 secs
Around the TOPGEAR test track.
ST 1min 33.6
Cupra 1min 33.5

I didnt know they had taken the Ed30 round the track. But i still stand by my previous posts about the top gear track being a bit crap. The tracks used by 5th gear are a little more on the challenging side!
Fountain of knowlegde hurdy you wouldnt happen to know if the R32 was DSG or manual??

pretty sure it was a manual

It was a manual as Topher says.
