Morning all!!
Right, my mk2 16v has just crept past the 115k miles mark today and I've been a bit lazy keeping up to date with my oil changes. Usually I'll do 5k a change and it keeps the tappets from complaining too much; They've starting to tick again and it's annoying the hell outa me!
I don't have the cash to rip the head apart and replace them so will have to go down the 'flushing' route to get the tarnish of them (and stop the poxy noise!!!).
I started doing some diggin on what flush to use as the Wynn's stuff I've never been that impressed with; I stumbled across a few recommendations for Forte products which sounded promising. Whilst reading about I've heard ALOT of people talking about running diesel oil for 1 to 2k as well to help flush the engine?! Apparently they have better detergents in them and modern diesel oil is almost the same as petrol!?
Just wondering what others may or may not have heard or tried with this!?
Dave.

i don`t know about diesel oil but have heard forte products are good
how`s things anyway stranger?
-
ahh i saw you driving t'other day david, hows tricks?
i've heard that diesel oil is good for keeping engines quiet but not as a flushing additive. however a guy i know puts diesel in the oil to flush it out, drives 50-100 miles and apparently it works great. thought about trying it on my passta but was too scared!

a guy i used to work with sweared by running diesel/oil mix (50/50) for up to an hour, apprently works a treat

Cheers for the replies - all good thanks lads and roll on the summer (and the show season :p)
Well I'm gonna give it a wurl me thinks - after doing some reading it seems quite a well used practice! Just to recap this is diesel 'oil' not diesel 'fuel' in the oil - I've seen a few horror stories of that mistake being made whilst reading about! It'll rip your engine to pieces if done wrong
I'll keep everyone posted . . .
-
no, i mean diesel fuel in with your oil to flush it out.
-
Well that does the job too but in a fair more aggressive fashion often with some nasty results!
I'd try the diesel oil first as the whole idea is it's a slow gentle process with the extra detergents, not attacking the inside of your engine with something fair more destructive.
-
gotcha, let me know how it works as when i changed the rocker cover gasket on my passat it was frickinblack in there and i fancied giving it a bit of a clean out.

me too, a 50/50 mix iirc, and doesnt need running for too long either.
-
stick half a litre of auto transmission fluid in for about 50-100 miles, that'll clean it up better than diesel!!
-
biodiesel.
Works wonders. Get as stronger mix as you can though.
-
^^^ seriously what are the risks envolved here then? i've just changed the passat with synta silver but next time i'll definately want to try and clean it out...

I'm not being funny, but there are products out there specifically designed to flush through engines! we use Forte products, on both petrol and diesel engines with exceptional results, Forte fuel additives are also very god as well, for the price of a round of drinks, why bother pissing around...

Right, as thom has suggested there are engine specific cleaners. For ease of use go for these imo.
Now, in regards to biodiesel it is a combustible heavy oil, more efficient than normal diesel, and less of a pollutant overall. It is also a detergent, i.e. will run through your system cleaning everything it goes past, however at the same time it will chow down on anything biological in the system, these include rubbers, nylons etc. So fuel piping, injector seals, piston rings are all susceptible to perishing. This is of course if you run it for ages.
So you can use it to flush the system in a neat form. :nerd:

about diesel fuel
My dad topped my mk2 up with deisel
It ran much better and he swares by it
not sure about the engine oil flusher but ive heard transmission oil works well and is a good for running in new engines
-
Use ATF Fluid as it is an oil so has good lubrication properties as well as strong cleaning agents. You can drive the car on ATF. Forte products will do the same things, they are very very good!
-
let me get this right.... put this stuff in the engine... http://www.forteuk.co.uk/Top_end.htm and it will shut my tappets up.
and then what?? replace oil and filter, or can i run the car on it?
soz to sound dumb but iv never had this problem b4 and never had to fix it!
