Title: fan belt noise
Post by: greggyboy on 16 March 2008, 18:45
Hi all, got a problem with my fan belt. It's sounds like when the fan belt needs replacing, but the fan belt has been replaced recently. I noticed that the top wheel (one next to the alternator) gets really hot once it starts spinning. Could this mean that the bearing inside has gone?

cheers greg.

Don't be such a pedant - you know exactly what the guy's going on about, why not offer some help?

It sounds like your water pump is starting to seize.  You will need to get this replaced.  Water pump's are only about £20-30 and it's not too tough a job, although if you have powersteering you'll need to unbolt the pump to get at the waterpump.  Be careful that you get all the powersteering pump mounting bolts tightened back up before you try and tension the drive belt.

but i think they do come in either 2 parts or as a hole unit as one of my last gti's the water pump was iffy and when i went and got the water pump they only gave me the front unit
