Had my renewal through on Saturday and was gobsmacked - £1480.00  (Churchill) This is 65% no claims bonus, 15K miles a year, driveway, no previous claims, £200 excess, area is ok and 3 points :embarassed:
last year I paid £850 for my 225 TT which was older but probably only worth 8K less than my Golf. I'll search the forum as maybe it's been posted elsewhere but anyone got recommendations on insurers I should try (maybe Golf/performance car related) - I know you don't know how good the insurer is until you come to claim but I really dont want to pay this for insuring this type of car - maybe a Porka 911
Also if anyone has any definate "avoid" insurers that would be great.
Cheers

Regular best buys for GTi's in the past have been :
Privilege
More Than
Greenlight Insurance (especially for remaps etc.)
Swift
You could try for a basic quote here :-
http://www.moneysupermarket.com/c/car-insurance/quote-request/1/
This will give you about 100 quotes from most of the big companies in one go !
Then go onto the actual cos. website to tweak it more

Kermit,
I have started to trawl through various quote engines to sort out some insurance for my new (arrives next Saturday) GTi.
I found the Tescos site quite good. Bell direct Insurance were also competitive. I am going to try Adrian Flux tomorrow to see what they can offer.
I am 30, 8 yrs NCD, no points, accidents etc, parked on the street (In Bristol), Average cost was £450.
I always take out a 'new' policy each year, even if its with the same company. They really crank the rates up for renewals!
-
Adrian Flux for me, very mod friendly
-
It is also well worth joining Quidco if you hav'nt already
http://www.quidco.com
You can get a lot of cashback from taking out insurance through this site
So far this year I have received over £200 cash back from car & house insurance policies
They currently offer :-
£100 cashback for a new Privilege car insurance policy
http://www.quidco.com/finance/general-insurance/privilege-car-insurance/
£ 70 cashback for a More Than car insurance
£ 45 cashback for Swift cover
etc.....
Sounds too good to be true but it does work, I can vouch for that

Kermit, although Churchill are part of the Royal Bank of Scotland group, so is Tesco insurance, you might want to try their other insurance company Direct line. They don't belong to any comparison site but I have always found them to be very cheap, certainly worth a shout.
I am 38, no points, 20k + miles per annum, use car for business & personal, full protection and fully comp with breakdown cover, 5 yrs + NCB, £600 per year!!!
Give em a go,

thats rubbish about companies cranking up the rates for renewals, I'm with Direct Line and my first years premium was £680, west london, 7 years NCD, no convictions, parking on road. anyway 1 year later it came through for renewal, and its was £580.
did a requote through their website as a new customer and it came out as £630.
-
greenlight - they quoted me 595 for ed 30. In locked garage, no convictions. 4 yrs no claims
I have had other quotes at just under 1K

Glad to see you have had a better experience than me. In my experience Tesco's, Admiral and AXA renewal's have been 10-15% higher than a 'new' customer.

I usually find the same, it is better to renew with a different company that are offering new customer discounts.
This year Privilege bumped up my premium around 10% to around £400 (basic) and so I looked around.
With Swiftcover it was only £287.31 (basic) & £382.60 (with all the options protected, legal etc..) and thats for an ED 30 :nerd:
Swiftcover are part of AXA I believe and are obviously trying to build up a share of the market at the moment
-
ive been with swiftcover for the past 7 months, and so far so good, easy to amend policy without having to phone them.
-
I've been with Privilege for about 7/8 years now and despite all efforts have never been able to find a company to better their price.
Their on-line prices are cheaper than their phone quotes. Privilege and Direct Line are the same company, so if you have a Home Insurance policy with D.L. you get a discount on your Car Insurance.

Insurance seems to have risen anywhere 10 to 20% in the last year. Just renewed for end of March. Spent several days getting quote after quote both online and by phone. Exhausted the list I think.
2 Driver policy wife and me (mid 40's). NO accidents, claims, but I carry 3 points, but for insurance its counted as 6 as it over 5 years for most companies. Where as 3 have dropped off totting up on licence as over 3 years. Several companies refused to quote on 2 convictions ( both speeding) !!
In the end stayed with LV Frizzell, £340 for the GTI and £647 for the M3. Both with legal, and full foriegn use on the M3, Usual Full comp but no business use except to and from work. No replacement car as not needed. Sensible excess of £300 GTI and £450 M3.
Some companys quoted upto £1300 just for the M3!
Closest quote to LV was NU surprisingly.
Used More Than 2 years ago, but customer service is appalling, after they get your dosh, Indian call centre, and it just become to painful, paperwork was always wrong. So been with LV Frizzell for 10 of last 11 years and very good service.

Thanks for all the responses - useful information and looks like very different quotes and experiences. I've also noticed "renewals" were higher which is why I ended up going to Churchill last year - Bell Direct gave me loyalty discount but still wouldn't match new policy price and at the time churchill had "beat your renewal" going on so tool advantage of that. Looks like I've got an exciting weekend of trawling round for quotes, if I come across any good deals I will let everyone know incase anyone else is renewing
Just out of interest how are your insurers treating factory options - I had one place try to say they were the same as after market accessories - it's not as though I've been down to Halfrauds and bought a leather interior and fitted it on the driveway, same with Xenons!
-
I am currently looking into insurance for mine and the Mrs - tried a few so far, Adrian Flux, Greenlight, HIC, Sainsbury's.
Cheapest was Greenlight by £200 under Adrian Flux, funny thing is though the Mrs' insurance on the 25th Anniversary came out the same as the Mk5 GTI.
-
I went with diamond....they provided excellent service and you could add in mods etc online.
Yep its advertised as a girls insurance specialist, dont laugh...but they gave me by far the best quote etc see my detail within the insurance section.

I’ve been using Liverpool Victoria (LV) for a couple of years... based in Poole. I’ve found them very competitive compared to VW Insurance, I saved over £200 when I changed.
I’ll probably check out Adrian Flux when I renew in August, as I may chip my ED30, and I believe they are modding friendly! I don’t know LV’s stance on modified cars, I guess like most insurers they like to keep it simple.
Good luck... Hotrod

Thumbs up to Greenlight, I know we all hate having to pay insurance but its one of those things you have to do and Greenlight made it as good as it could be.
Decent quote and mod friendly - funny how when I listed my mods Neil guessed the manufacturer each time!
easy to deal with - questions etc
received documents promptly
Job Done, fingers crossed thats it for another year - oh once I have sorted out the wife's car insurance next week
