yes, im my opinion transforms the dashboad look. if you have Highline computer already installed to your car, it flashes up on the directions to your destination. If you have Midline, its abit crap without it.
Im sure you can find this unit cheaper then £499. keep hunting on ebay.

It will probably continue to drop in price as the MFD3 or "RNS510" has been out since december.

I've had my RNS 510 since September!

Have the mfd2 dvd unit on mine and to be honest does the job pretty well, do fancy the 510 although not at £1k!
I may sell my mfd2 and put the money towards the 510 although to be fair, still a lot of money!

I ordered one from ebay and find it really good. I decided to go for the ebay shop you have linked to as they are uk based and i could track them easily if i had a problem. There are alot of cheaper ones on ebay, from lithuania and such, but few have the silver finish which my RC300 had. I found the shop very helpful and using the link below i installed it in under and hour.

I can't beleive how much VW charge for a factory fit unit. I would however say the 510 is a step up in performance from th MFD2 dvd, whether its worth twice the price i don't know.

because you can now put greasy fingerprints on the screen on the 510 for twice the price and its ok to do it, but if you do it to the Mfd2 dvd/cdrom type, you get an earful from the owner of the car "whos been touching the dam screen again" . It would do my head in, its bad enough when the kids put their slimey fingers on the glass in the back. (a pet hate of mine)

Thanks folks, i did recognise the shop they own as one thats close by where Inters is held so if i had any probs visiting them wasn't a problem.I have got the art of getting into the stereo down to about 10mins now after fitting and removing a rcd500, as the autochanger to to long to change cd's for my liking.

Totally agree with you here Phil, I had a Honda Accord Exec with a touch screen sat nav and I was forever wiping over the screen to get rid of the finger marks
As for my kids, what is it with slightly frosted windows and kids these days!!!

I know that the OEM thing is a main consideration when going for the SATNAV in the Golf, but if you can live with an aftermarket set-up, they are leagues ahead of the VW kit for the same price. The fact that the RNS510 still doesn't display tracks etc is a crime in 2008!
-
the RNS 510 does display track names, just only with files on the hard disc, not via an ipod, yet...

Yet, the famous last word of VW sat nav units
