Title: ENGINE CUT OUT

Help, every time it's raining or wet outside i can be driving along quite merrily in my otherwise reliable MK2 GTI, when the whole car will go dead and the battery light will come on.

while it's not to much of a drama generally, taking a corner a little fast yesterday it happened, this causde my eyes to open slightly wide than usual.

i'm a newbie at this MK2 thing and am trying to learn as i go, i'm not keen to running staright to the local garage just yet, has this happened to anyone or can anyone shed some light on oit for me please.

I got the same problem, its only done it a few times but any advice would be great.

does this happen when the car is cold? or does it happen when its warmed up? it could be fuel mixture is too lean maybe.

The only common factor is the wet, i know that may sound stupid but i've become dead concious about remembering when it happened.

the only thing i could think of is an exposed wire somewhere,shorting out when it gets wet, although that doesn't narrow it down at all!!

Glad to hear that it's not just me it's happening to though :smiley:

Try some new leads, when they get old they let water foul the plugs, try a can of damp start next time it happens, if it starts its your leads  :wink:

When it rains, check for water leaks/puddles in the fusebox area and also around the ECU.

And...  16v or 8v ???

Cheers for the direction fellas, will try some new HT leads next week. Any idea how big a job it is?? will have a peruse of the trusty Haynes manual.

Changing leads is easy, start with cyl1, remove it and replace it with the new one. Do the same for the second, remove and put new one on. That way you don't get the order wrong for the dizzy.

While you are at it, change the dizzy cap and rotor arm (about £7 in parts) or at least check how worn it is. Does the car misfire before it cuts out?
