just got back from doin my mate starter motor on a 1990 gti 8v
what a fookin nightmare 3 bolts never had this much trouble with anything before
finally got it back together
-
i bet you forgot to support the engine with a jack
its a 10 min job max
-
its easier than the 1.3 mk2 golf as the starter motor is at the back of the engine under the inlet manifold
-
yea mine was terrible! after about 3 hours of varying the engine height with a jack i removed the engine mount, got the grinder out and took the nuts off that are welded to the engine mount, then whacked it with a hammer. that made the job alot easyer. mine was a bit warped tho because the main engine mount part of the starter motor completly broke off so it was just holding all that power down with those those 2 inferior bolts. i think it happened when my mate threw it into reverse without the clutch in..

oh yeah the engine was supported but god know what happened. i was told it was a 10 min job by one of my other mates and he said exactly the same thing. guessin the jack dropped or something!
like i said
NIGHTMARE

I forgot to jack mine up  took me an hour of jacking to get it to line up again...
Oh well, another lesson learned!
