Renault Megane 225 sport ?.Took one out for a test yesterday & was very impressed.07 6000 miles black mettalic paint full leather 18''alloys climate con etc.£14995.I know it's not a Golf but the build quality felt very good no squeakes/rattles etc & the keyless entry & push button start are really cool .Makes you wonder when compared to the cost of a gti ?.

Gene Hunt would never drive a french car. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING MAN!
Nick

Yes.The GTI is worth the cost.

Yes.The GTI is worth the cost.
Right, that sorts this thread out
-
List price for that car is £20,395.
That car has lost 27% of its value in year one and just 6000miles!! It will continue to lose its value in a similar fashion.
The high residuals of the Golf GTI mean that whilst the purchase price may be higher its resale price is proportionally higher and therefore the depreciation and true cost of the car will be less.
Ignore the price on the car and concentrate on the depreciation, thats the cars true cost.
Plus no amount of F1 inspired stickers can hide it from being an ugly car, capable, but ugly.
-
No squeakes and rattle. I would foking hope so after jsut 6000 miles.
-
Would never buy a Meg. Test drove one and thought it was awful, but I guess it depends on what you're driving at the moment as to how it feels to you.
There's a hell of a lot of used Meg's for sell because owners are realising what a pile of rubbish they are and also nobody but nobody wants to but one.
Also, if you become a Meg owner you have to start justifying to others why on earth you bought one and you start to use silly words like "twisties" and "track" (although you'll never actually race around one).
Don't do it, you know it makes sense
-
For me the test is would you be comfortable telling someone what car you drive without going into the details eg.
When asked I say Golf GTI. Everyone knows what a Golf GTi is and that its a quality product. No further comment is required.
Would you be happy to tell a colleague at work or a girl in a bar you've got a Renault Megane?
I think you'd find you had to add the words 225 Sport on to the end and then find yourself having to explain its not a normal megane but a 225bhp special version. Ultimately that makes you look a bit of a tit and your justifying to yourself why you've spent a stack load of cash on a naff car just because its been dragged through a Halfords backwards.

I think this sums up my feelings for a Megane 225 :

Don't get me wrong the mk5 gti is still at the top of my wish list BUT i did look at an edition 30 the other day which was an 07 plate 8000 miles with silver mettalic & the up grade headlights & that was £19995.With those extras it must of been close to 24-25 k new ? so that has lost the best part of 5 grand in a short space of time ?.
-
No squeakes and rattle. I would foking hope so after jsut 6000 miles.
................ok BUT in it's defence how many mk5's have been back for warranty work for the same thing ? a few i think reading the post's on here. :undecided:
-
At the end of the day, it's your money.
I hate to admit that I did consider buying one about a year ago and took a test drive in the R26 230 F1 Megane.
I thought it was just awful, gear stick two foot high, seat too high and the it just had no uummpphhh.
A year later, this has manifested into my current hatred for anything Renault. I sometimes sit here with my head
in my hands thinking how close I was to wasting a serious amount of cash on a seriously crap car.
I would be suicidal now if I had actually bought one
Thank the lord I didn't.
But hey, don't let me put you off.

Answer to that question is ...........car was an parallel import., theyre residuals value suffer slightly more. full uk high spec car would not loose that ammount.if been hunting for ed 30's and all the cheap ones are imports, with no add ons, ie dsg etc
-
Gene, if your thinking of buying a megane i would leave the 225 sport, not the best handling and go for the megane 230 r26 a rapid B-road and track car not even a gti would stick with it,the r26 has the limited-slip diff and is a bit hardcore for some so as an all round package most people would buy the gti.

and if you wanna loose your teeth fillings and have a shot spine by time your in your 40's, then get the r26

Then again if you apply the same logic:-
"I drive An edition 30 Golf......................" :lipsrsealed:

I used to have a megane for about 8months... and about half of this was spent back at the dealership. It wasnt even my car so I wasnt bothered about all the small niggly probs, but the standard of quality of things like electrics and ride just were not up to it. Poor excuse for a car imo. Went with a friend to go see one a few month ago (225) they have the same problem still.. put the car in gear and the gearstick continues to wobble like its in neutral!! wtf!!
What you get for you money is alot of stuff.... but this just means more stuff to go wrong. I got rid of mine and got a C2, which was 10x better... now thats saying something!
-
Gene Hunt would never drive a french car. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING MAN!
Nick
 :smug:very true. But jokeing aside you do get a lot of car for the money.

You also get lots of free coffee chucked in.... whilst your sat at the dealers waiting for them to fix your car (which usually doesnt take that long.. as they cant find the fault... because its a design fault.. because the car is crap!)
-
If you are considering a hot hatch around that price range, have you considered the Mk 1 Seat Leon Cupra R? (my last car)
Brilliant car, I had no complaints whatsoever.
Dont buy a Megane if you like your electrics working. I dont care what they say, despite being in the 21st century, they are still made by a Frenchman, therefore they will definitely break.
-
Gene, hope you realise everytime some French farmer, bus driver, train driver, parking attendent etc etc, gots the hump over losing one of his/her 150 days annual leave, right to retire at 50 an a full pension funded by British taxes, that lump of French metal will drive its self to the nearest ferry port and blockade anything that moves, gonna be a real pain when some big Yorkie driver reverses right over your paper thin metal French bonnet, just think about that my man.......they didn't call for our help twice in the 1900's just because they liked us...if they can't protect their own backyard from the Bosch, then they can't make decent cars, know what I mean Bro?

Surely coming on a Golf GTI website to get an appraisal of a Renault Megane was never going to lead to lead to the most positive set of responses.
Why not try www.meganesport.net I'm sure you'll get enough rubbish spouted by those guys to balance out the argument.

........ :rolleyes:easy mike i only posted for a .As above the GTi is top of my wish list(had 3 gti's in the past) just thought they offered a lot of car for a fair price. :smug:.

I'm only joking, I'm not a die hard GTI fan, infact the missus gave me loads of grief about buying this car as I used to refer to Mk4's as soulless german boxes.
The salesman asked me on the test drive what I though of Golfs and my response was that I didn't actually like them. He was needless to say unimpressed that we were on said test drive until I pointed out I quite liked this one. Think the GTI has a lot more appeal than the standard golf models.
Would've looked at a megane myself if I'd not wanted an Auto box (Its not an auto its DSG I know I know) though I doubt I would've actually bought one. Plus their boots a very funny shape and the dog wouldn't have liked it.
Just found everyones comments amusing, though somewhat as expected.

Arh but you would of course tell them, "oh you only have so many months instead of years of warranty left". If theres no history of the car being imported or any service history, the dealer wouldnt touch it, or if a private buyer had any savvy, they would run a Vin number check on Vw's computer to check your "history" and the actual history that alot of buyers wont tell you.I so nearly got stung by this twice!!!!(Ed30 and Candy white GTi). If youve had the GTi imported yourself, then its perfectly fine, but if your purchasing an import 2nd hand you really have to look closely into all this b4 splashing the cash.

A buddy of mine at work has a boggo Megane hatch. For some mind-bending reason he likes the shape! However it’s always going back to the dealership with engine cut-out problems and they can’t fix it. Their advice is “when it breaks down again call out the RAC and get it trailered to us†Renaults UK support has been woeful, he cant wait to get shot of the car and buy something german!
All cars have issues, it’s the way the dealership & head office deals with any problems ensures further custom and loyality (IMO).
My 4-Mo had faults but I still found it a faithful friend and it took an ED30 to prise it out of my grip!

golfs always age good,a ed30/gti will look a nice car in 10 years time, all gtis do from mk1 to mk5.
renaults look terrible now, they look like girly cars with that rear.the steering wheel is taken straight from a bus.
golf worth every penny more in my view.
