Right here goes, my golf started making funny creaking noises when pulling away and turning, this developed the other to knocking noises. it only happens when the car is under load, slowing down no noise, turning with clutch down no noise.
got someone to look at it on the ramps and couldn't find the problem.
he said best to let the problem develop a bit then have another look.
right not sure if this is related. but last night driving along M5 when all of a sudden my steering decided to have a mind of its own. i had to fight it to gain control using all 3 lanes before pulling up on hard shoulder. checked pant and rang the rac.
he came had a look played power steering belt wiggled the steering wheel and was a bit better but happened again on hard shoulder, so towed me home.
after explaining noises to him he thinks might be worn diff
sorry this is long winded but wanted give all info.
any ideas

mines doing this a bit too... im pretty certain its the diff... not 100% though, mine just make a throbbing/knocking noise whenever im driving, even with clutch down, but it knocks in relation the the speed of the wheels turning. hence why i think its the diff...

yea if it was definatly pulling hard to one side it is the diff. this happened to my old jap car and when the diff went it threw me into a ditch. it also punched a hole in the casing. needed a whole new gear box.

As suggested it might be the diff crownwheel parting company, by losing it's rivets. Alternatively it could be a very dry CV joint. Check all of these before tearing out the gearbox.

My money is on the diff crown wheel- common problem on old Golfs

Whenever you're moving the diff is turning, so it should be noticeable when towed or with clutch disengaged.

thats what i thought and thats why i ruled out cv joint,
so i'm none the wiser

update
it was the near side cv joint
and all is well,
