Ive looked into almost everything on getting my 91 Digi to idle properly but with no joy. She starts first time everytime but idles around 1k - 1,450. This happens when she is first started and will still happen when hot. Ive cleaned and checked breather pipes, cleaned icv with carb cleaner, put new plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm in but still no joy. Any help would be great.

This is only my 2nd post and ive not even had my golf for 3 days yet but i was pointed in the direction of the blue temp sensor when asking about idle problems with my 8v digifant. Have you changed that?
-
Thanks for the reply and welcome  I changed the blue sender today, still no joy
-
air flow meter probably
-
Errm this isn't much help but there was some sort of brown (I think) wire in the vicinity of behind the throttle body that on my car had become disconnected. Connecting it back up sorted my high idle.
No idea what it was, I'm sure someone else could tell you.
Blah!

I got the same problem mate on mine and just can't figure it out....I changed all the same as you and still idles weird some of the time.
If its the airflow meter, can it be fixed or checked to see if working correctly.
-
I hope an Air flow meter can be repaired, bet there loads to buy from a VW dealer. I keep thinking that its got something to do with the 'flying saucer' I rung the VW dealer up yesterday and they want £37 for one. When i cleaned the flying saucer out with carb cleaner the other day it leaked a touch from the top. Going to go out in a mo with some tape and totally tape the top up so no air can escape/enter. Will put outcome up a bit later!
-
Yeah let me know how you get on.
-
No luck with any of the vac pipes or flying saucer. I now think its either the air flow meter or the idle control valve, to which i bet neither are cheap

have you tried the flying saucer gromet (the rubber it sits in)? this is prone to splitting.
-
I replaced the gromet the other day, no joy  Just been looking through a folder of reciepts that came with my car. It looks like this problem has been going on since Nov 05 with a few invoices saying 'look into rough idle' and a few parts being replaced over the years but with no joy. I felt the ICV whilst ignition on and its buzzing so dont think its that, maybe air flow meter?

My idle stays at around 900rpm all the time even when its started cold and my rev range is full of flat spots. Im guessing i need a new Blue temp sender?
-
Might aswell put a blue sensor on as part of maintainance mate, costs £14 from dealer. When you have installed the sensor unplug the blue connector and rev 3 times letting it rev to 3k then back to normal before next rev. Re-connect blue plug. Another thing with it sitting at 900 when cold, is your warm air feed from manifold to airbox plugged in or could be perished?
-
Sorry to be a royal PITA but where is the blue temp sender looking at this pic?

And paul there's a warm air feed from the manifold to airbox?
This is the most complicated engine ive ever owned, so many sensors and stuff
I should buy a haynes manual really

Where your dipstick is, to the right of that (as in a couple of inches) is a large hose. On that hose you will find 2 plugs, one black and one blue. These plugs are beside each other. Take the blue plug off and there is the blue sensor
-
does it have any problem pulling or accelerating? that is quite a good sign of airflow meter malfunctioning. see if you can plug it into a emissions tester an see what it comes up with.
-
Not any real troubles pulling away. She is a bit flat until 4000rpm, been told this is fairly common and known as 'Digi-lag' to which a good tune up should solve.
