Title: heater matrix replaced but still no heat - needs some kind of valve?
Post by: Andy Jeffries on 12 March 2008, 11:45
as above...garage says that this valve is no longer made so i have a new matrix but still no heat..what valve are they goin on about and where can i get one from!?

please help as i have no car atm and i cant handle having no heat after spending money on a new matrix!!!

It sounds like they're talking about the pressure reducing valves in the engine bay.  If you've had a Golf3 matrix fitted you don't need them as it can take the pressure, so that's probably your solution.

hmm...its just a mk2 matrix thats been fitted...apparently its the valve that connects to the heat control to regulate the water going into the matrix? hope someone knows what the hell im goin on about?

the two pipes going to your bulkhead - connected to your new matrix - if these have alloy coloured "valves" on them (mounted about 3 inches up the pipework) they could be blocked. these valves are big and you cant miss them. there will be a small "bypass" pipe joing the two valves.

if the pipes have no valves on them then... i guess you could have an air lock? in which case you will need to bleed the coolant.

i assume you connected all the heater control cables back up?

you should have two pipes going through your bulkhead. if these have alloy coloured "valves" on then they could be blocked. if the pipes just feed have no valves on them then... i guess you could have an air lock? in which case you will need to bleed the coolant.

so these valves could in theory be cleaned and re used rather than being replaced - frustrating thing is that they are behind the dash so it needs to come out again and that means more £'s as i just dont have the confidence to do it!

what do the valves actually do?

No that valave is in the engine bay. No need to remove the dash again.

sorry i edited the original post (a bit misleading), the valves are in you engine bay, not under the dash. pls re-read my first post

so at no point they were behind the dash rather than in the bay?

car is an 88 btw...

Correct-a-mundo. It should be just the right of the engine on the pipes that head off through the bulkhead.

so...what does this valve do?

It's to stop the water pressure blowing your matrix up. It was fitted as a recall when VW realised there was a problem. If your matric has been replaced with a MKIII one then you don't even need the valve anymore.

ahh..so is there a valve that connects to the heater control slider to regulate the temp also? and can this one fail?

I told the guy at the garage to fit a mk3 one because of this but he said that they were the same..guess im gettin a big lesson in why not to trust a garage!

There is no valve to control the heat. The slider just moves a flap to give you hot, cold or mixed air. I could be he hasn't connected the flap up properly, when you move the heat one can you feel the resistance change as it moves along, can you hear a flap moving in the dash?
