Cabby's can be anything from £500 to £5000+ depending on what state it's in. I'd say between 2-3k for a decent one, 3-4k for a top one and anything above that for one that's had a lot of mods done and maybe an engine transplant.

Cabs are wicked, you'd love it. I had one for four years and I'd still have it now if I could have afforded to keep it along side my Rallye and my camper.

As diane said, welcome to the dark side!!!

as gibby says you can pay peanuts or top dollar. As with top dollar it is presumed you shouldn't get as many problems.. but this is down to condition of the car!

I know nothing about cabby autos but I'd personally always go for a manual.

is it easy to change from auto to manual?
Title: Re: cabby
Post by: [han] on 12 March 2008, 20:00
probably not worth the hassle tbh...

Agreed. There's loads of manual cabs around and very few autos so no point in causing yourself more hassle.

Tango,
If your serious about buying a cab, have a look in the mk1 maintenance section, there are loads of useful hints and tips to ensure you buy a decent car. As with a mk2, remember its an older car, it will have problems, but there are people, if not here but the mk1 forum, that will no doubt able to help..

Good luck with your search.

Know how you feel, loads of niggly jobs. Fix one thing and you realise you have to do another. The bulk of the work is done to mine now, just got get the roof done and fit the new interior, oh and a new radiator and wheel bearing, they're not big jobs though.

Get a Mk1 cab and you'll love it. Summer is just around the corner too, perfect timing!

I'm getting a lot of 'oh, cool car!' comments recently from people when they see mine, and not necessarily people who are into VW's or cars in general. As they get rarer, when you see a nice one on the road it definitely attracts positive attention. Do your bit to keep the Mk1's alive!

i've just been to look at a MK1 cabby, only a GL tho. I dont know very much about them as i'm a MK3 owner at the mo, want a new project tho. It has Karman badges on the wings, it's burgundy with a beige/cream hood. Tartan seats are a bit ripped and trim needs attention. The centre consol has 3 holes too, should there be dials in them..??....all tyres are pershed and cracked walls as if it's been sat a while...not sure about MOT cos geezer was out the office......It's a Y reg and the geezer wants £1100 for it......any thoughts..???

spawny = jammy

what u reckon i should pay for the cabby i saw today......the carpets in front were soaked, mould on sun visors, the spare wheel was rusty as hell so i guess boot leaks too, he said the old boy hasnt driven it for ages, gets it MOT'd and leaves it, not had road tax since 2005 but has got 8 months MOT. it's a 1.5 GL manual. the seats are ripped, door cards need replacing cos handles been ripped off. all tyres are perished too.....only good thing about it is 76,000 miles with history !

Having read what's wrong with it, my thought is he's having a laugh. It's not even a GTI is it ?

nope, not a GTI.....told him i'll give him £500 and left him my number.........watching an E reg clipper on ebay at mo....£500 reserve and seems looooooaaads less work.

Good man. :afro: £500 tops for the other one and that's being very generous if you want me to be honest.

£1100 is too much. I just picked up my J reg clipper 1.8 with 82K on the clock for only £600 and it sounds like yours has a little more that needs doing than mine does.
