Having had the GTI for 4 months and done 4700 miles, I've started to notice some rattles. The main one is in the centre console in the air vents. It creaks and rattles on all but the smoothest surfaces. Theres a couple more but I've yet to locate them. Could be in the doors/speakers.
My previous 2004 MK5 GT TDI had the same rattle in the centre console. You would have thought VW would have sorted this out by now!
Is it worth getting the rattles looked at or could it cause more problems? I've heard of dealers scratching the dash when getting the air vents out.
Cheers.

I did mine myself. Be careful pulling it out as the retaining clips can snap. I put a little bit of velcro in and also some to the underside of the edge of the grid and now it is all rattle free
I agree that VW should have re-designed the fault out by now though

Strangely enough i only realised the other day that there is a vent at the top of the dash :embarassed:
Did you know it opens and closes and everything???

I don't think I have the skills/patience to fix it myself. Not when its this new anyway.
My last car also had the top air vent. Not sure how to use it. I leave it open all the time.

Looks a bit daunting. Will probably break something. I'll leave it for a bit and get it done under warranty. If they break anything then they can fix it!
Cheers

Looks or rather sounds like my car has developed the infamous centre airvent rattle , or at least i think thats where it's coming from.
It sounds more like a buzzing sound, can usually be heard from about 15mph upwards, with the stereo off it can still be heard up to about 60, it seems more noticable when slowing down for traffic lights etc.
If it is the centre air vent should i be able to temporarily stop it by pressing down on the top of the vent?

Yes

Thats not what i wanted to hear  i've tried pressing down on it but it doesnt stop or even reduce the buzzing. It does sound like it's coming from that area though but it's hard to pin it down. I even took my headunit out last night and went for a quick drive to see if i could hear any better but unfortunatley not, might try again today or tomorrow. I should add, my headunit can be removed without taking the dash apart.

Kenny, my last GTI had the same problem, while at the stealers I asked them to look into it, they were aware if this issue and do have a fix for it. The noise on mine wouldn't go away even if I pressed on the centre vent. Apparently it is a bad design fault although I am happy to say once the dealer did their fix it never returned.
Give them a go, it's worth it, trust me!

Cool, cheers.
I suppose as with most mass produced cars, i know the GTi isnt but the car it's self is, it would be unusual for a unique problem to develop on just one of them so it stands to reason that my car has the same issue yours did. I'll give them a call in the morning and see what they say.
Just hoping they dont get funny about my car having an aftermarket headunit, they know i've had it fitted and i did ask about whether it would effect any warranty claims etc and they said it wouldnt but we'll see what happens know i've got a problem.

Curiousity got the better of metoday and i decided to pop the top part of the vent off and have a look, i didnt take the front part of the vent out but i managed to get into the area where most people wedge something in to stop the rattling, my car looks different though, there must have been a revision to this part on the later cars, i tried pressing and pulling on the area while i was driving but it's definately not from this.
I've got the car booked into the dealer on Wednesday so we'll see what they find.

Keep us posted kenny. If it sorts it out then I'll get mine booked in.
Cheers.

Will do.
I spoke to the guy i know in the workshop when i was in today, said they had a Golf in a few months ago that had something come loose on the bulkhead! Didnt like the sound of that, by the sounds of it thats pretty much a dashboard out job to sort.
We'll see what happens when it goes in. Typically it quietened down today so it's probably going to be a nightmare to find, it's a sure thing it'll shut up when they're looking for it.

kenny.s, I guess you and the others have seen The Docs excellent step-by-step instructions?
See my post today, 23 March.
Anyway, I'm interested in "....the area where most people wedge something in to stop the rattling,..."
Using the docs photos, can you indicate where exactly this is please?
Thanks, pswinbank

The rattle on the vent (on on top of the Dash) was so bad I had a new one fitted by the stealer!
