I know I might get flamed for this ( espeically as mine is lowered too ) - but thought I would get some other peoples opinions.
Coming home last night - I came to a roundabout an a Mk3 Gti came round in front of me - it looked good - lowered and big rims.
It then took off like a rat up a rain pipe. so as you do I followed suit.
Then he slammed on his brakes and slowed right down.
The reason - cos of a bump in the road where it crossed a bridge. not a speed bump - just a dip that makes ya car squat down.
Now I have to slow right down for speed humps - and to get on my drive - but I can drive this road at the speed limit without issue. All i can think is that he has major scrubbage on the rear wheels. :undecided: so has to slow down to 30 in a 60
So - why take off like that knowing you have to slow to a crawl in 200 yards - and secondly - why make ya car impractical like that
Discuss . . . .
PS> oh and Mr M ***ADN - coming up from Cholsey - you were on ya mobile too werent ya -tut tut.
-
i know what you mean! on some bumpy roads my susp setup is useless, i could drive quicker in a standard micra.
-
Hence I haven't lowered the cab to a stupidness lowerage...it might look cool, but i woudn't want to look like a tw@t like he did
Dinx
-
as you come from oxford (not sure what the the road is but is a dual and then joins the m40) anyway as the road joins the the m40 southbound you go over the motorway and join but there is a dip which never really seemed that bad but once just after getting the vr decked i took this at 90 and nearly broke my neck on the roof! i sh!t you not! lol
i now do 60 round that bend!
-
oh 60s fair enuff mate - and i am sure you dont try and dust someone 200 yards before it
and yeah know that dip
-
Here's a crazy idea.
Maybe he wasn't from around there.
-
how did he know to slam on then  you cant see the dip in the road  a straight run

This is why I avoid lowering my cars at all costs. The G2 Syncro I have is at the ride height it is so that it handles. That means sucks bumps up and will suffer vicious compressions when pushing on without bottoming or topping out. If you want to drive fast in the UK you need supple suspension, not a 'slammed' car. Yes, it may handle 'like a go-kart', but that means they'll be bounced off line and you'll spend way too much time belting the bumpstops.
I've been told before by people that the rough ride is 'the price of being radical'. If back-damage is radical, count me out.
My T4 Syncro actually runs a higher ride height than standard, as it's running on Bilstein dampers and Seikel springs. Despite running high, because the dampers are quite stiff it handles very well. Lowering and improving handling are not really linked, people just like to make out they are, but it's more aesthetics, as far as I can make out.
-
On the other hand, whats the point in building a fast car when the speed limit is at most 70mph?
Horses for courses really, all depends what your into!
-
depends where you live also, im happy to put up with the 10% of roads that dont suit my susp so i can rail the corners on the roads that do

Both lowering and stiffening will improve the handling of a car it's all about centres of gravity. Although what I do know is if you feel body roll no matter how good the car can handle your mind will tell you to back off. So much in driving is to do with perception and how brave you are mentally along with skill.
I do agree with one thing it is useless buying a Ferrari now because with the speed bumps etc there is no way to use any pace whatsoever in a car with such a low suspension.

Not necessarily, ideal suspension set up is apparently having soft springs with huge ARB's. However this isnt really practical. Its also not necesarily a case of being as low as you can go. 40mm is the ideal drop for a mk2 golf for instance as it levels off the wishbones and driveshafts.
-
i think some people go really slowly over speed bumps to make it loo like their cars are really low. the locals do this in their standard corsa's down cleethorpes sea front and it always makes me chuckle
-
I had a similar problem today...my mate drives a random jap import and just to go for a drive he had to plan the route avoiding speedhumps.... and the best bit is due to roadworks theres no way from his house!! that fkd his sunday run out idea's!...
-
i had a mk2 8v a couple of years ago with a 60mm drop. i loved the look of the car but there are too many speed bumps around here and i ended up with a shaved front splitter which was a pain in the arse! sticking to 40mm next time.

i agree with 40mm if you want to lower your mk2, i have no issues with the daily and speedbumps.
i think i might keep the project as standard tho as the daily's suspension is a bit harsh on long journeys!
-
I'm drop 60 and need to fettle my exhaust about once a month. I have to slow down for the hardcore speed bumps but normal ones are ok. Suspension is rock hard so girls require a sports bra. Other than that it's rockin!

You thought about running stretched tyres with that set up, Nick?
-
Kidneys are overrated anyway!
-
You thought about running stretched tyres with that set up, Nick?
Well I did, but I realised if I went down that route I'd have to buy some skinny jeans and get an emover hair cut and a bonet bra.

You can make faster progress with uprated shocks and springs on most crappy surface B roads than in a low stiff car with coils. Going too low on a daily is silly. (Which is why some people do it I guess )

Im off to get some skinny jeans then :smug:

dont forget your neon green trainers
-
I actually used to have neon orange trainers!
Grew out of them though

What he said.

My last two golfs have been left standard in the suspension dept, and i admit ultimately they lack the body control of those i have slammed......................but there is no way on earth a slammed golf can keep up in real world driving on give and take roads, and that for me is enough reason to leave it be. The most i have bothered with on my previous but one car was stiffer dampers just to help it a bit. Whats the point of a fast car if you cant use it??
i am ready to be slated you may begin ha ha
-
get it slammed and stop moaning! cars arent for driving, there for looking at!
hahahahahaha how sad am i.
-40mm springs and uprated shocks, pref koni and eibach.
sorted.
or if your me. chop the springs and save the money!
-
ultimately they lack the body control of those i have slammed
Body control means that the wheels stay on the road without the car bouncing all over the place. Any bounciness is normally the result of tired dampers. The body control of a well set up Golf2 on relatively fresh dampers and mounts at close-to standard ride height should be exemplary - it's one of the reasons the car is so feted.
You're confusing body control with a firm ride.
Slammed cars aren't driver's cars, or comfortable.
et it slammed and stop moaning! cars arent for driving, there for looking at!
As far as I can make out people start moaning when they slam their cars.

I dont, scraping every speed hump you get to amuses me
It was a proud day when a mate was following me and said i had sparks coming off the underside of my jetta when going over some bumps quickly lol!
-
just makes me laugh when you get a mid-aged old cow behind you going mental cos i slow down for every speed bum and crawl over it so save my sump.
thats the reason they use speed bumps, im just making them useful!
some round here i have the straddle otherwise sump scraping is inevitable, and i dont think my car is even that low!

That was because your exhaust was hanging down though

Well said i have had several mark 2s and i cant see much difference in the one i have now for handling, it is on standard suspension and handles every bit as well as my other which had fresh danpers and springs -40 mil and new top mounts. At the end of the day it depends on your chassis design how well the car will take the corners too.

i ride at a stupidly low height.. some say impractical, my dad says stupid, but i like it. but i don't go fast anywhere really!!!
