Post by: M41K1T on 07 April 2004, 16:49
I have a mk1 golf gti convertible 1800 8v on a d-plate.
Problem is my car starts up after about 3 go's runs fine but as soon as i touch the accelerator it cuts out and doesnt start again for at least bout 1hr then same problem accurs.
Any1 have n e ideas on what the prob could be?

are you getting a spark.......if it turns but wont start pull a lead off and put a spark plug in it and then put it against the head you should see a spark........
another way of doing this is to pull the ignition coil to dissy cap lead off the dissy and then put it near the head with the engine turning over you should see again a spark.......
if you have a spark the its probibly fuel related
is your fuel pump buzzing on igniton when you turn the key to with drivers door open you should hear the pump power up for a few seconds to pressurise the system.......
take the fuel relay out and put it back in as sometimes they dont connect right inside......

it will be either fuel or spark related.........find out if you have a spark...... check all of the engine earth leads......and ignition coil wires.........

Sounds like a fuel mixture problem, or more specifically, she might be flooding herself when she's still cold (it's not just your magic touch).

Check things that are associated with fuel control, broken vacuum lines/solenoid leaks, pressure regulator, idle control..
How is she if you let her idle to warmup?

Yeah i'm getting a spark, and the fuel pump seems 2 be workin fine. som1 told me it might be the air flow meter if it is how do i fix that. if it is flooding itself how do i sort that out?

cheers

I would also say it sounds like your flooding the engine. normally as they get older the fuel filler pipe corrodes and rust from it goes into the tank, I would hazard a guess that this will be the cause of your problems. Have a look at the filler neck and if in any doubt replace it, I think stainless ones are available so it makes sense fitting one of them.

Next time is plays up and wont start for a while try removing the plugs and seeing if they are fouled up by excessive fuel, maybe leave them out and spin the engine over a few times without touching the throttle and then put the plugs back in. try and start it.

As for setting the fuel flow metering flap you need to undo the rubber pipe from the top of the metering unit and put to one side, now get a magnet, one on the end of a screwdriver for picking up things is ideal.

Now place this on the metering flap and just move it up and down, you want to feel for any notches in the movement which might indicate wear in the fuel metering valves inside.

Lift the metering flap right up and you'll see underneath is a clip that you turn to adjust the position of the fuel flap in the metering cone. lower the flap down and it should sit roughly inline with the bottom of the metering cone. if it doesn't then pull the flap up and twist this clip from side to side till you get it sitting right.

Sounds to me like it could be a blockage..........you're getting enough fuel for it to start, but thats it. Take the fuel inlet line off the fuel pump.......have you got loads of cr@p in there?

Nope, no gunk there, can the air flow meter cause this? Aint got no decent vw mechanics round here! From a f***ing vauxhall town.

Is it flooding or fuel starvation? You should be able to pull a spark plug to tell........ :-\
