Title: 1.8 8v gti 72kw problems starting
Post by: hanr on 06 March 2008, 19:57
hi, i bought a gti that didnt start from the ignition(it hadnt been started for 2 months before that), then we tried towing it. first nothing happened then 2 cylinders started working and there were bangs into the exhaust and air cleaner(dont know how this part is called in english). my friend who is a bit more familiar with engines(not gtis though) thought the ignition timing was wrong. he also thought that the belt can be loose

can anyone suggest what could be wrong, would really appreciate it

It sounds like timing to me. You can easily check if the cam belt is loose - whip off the cover and it should not twist anymore than 90 degrees.

For 8v digifant (not K-Jet!!!) timing:  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33253.0

PS... Air cleaner is fine in english, although perhaps called "air filter" most of the time.
