Title: engine bay cleaner?

i searched couldnt find much about it on here!
what is good and what is sh!t!

engine bay cleaner/ engine cleaner from halfrauds, a good stiff brush, and a pressure washer.

wrap all electrics up i.e.altenator, ecu, afm, and isv and dont forget dizzi and leads! wrap them in plastic bags, secure with ducktape.

give the whole bay and engione a good spraying with cleaner, leave for 5 - 10 mins, scrub it all with brush, clean with pressure washer.

reapeat however many times you feel nessesary.

(i advise doing it on the grass verge outside your house, or somewhre that isnt on your dads brand new driveway.)

then off with all the plastics, make sure its reletivly dry, and fire her up, leave running for a while to dry the bay out, and hey presto, show car clean engine bay.

another trick is using the morrisons or alike jet washer. buy the code, type it into the machine after prepping the car on the forecourt.

then when the time runs out, push the car into the second bay(if there is one) and type in the same code again, and 9 times outta 10 it works.

I spent an hour with Mequiars Quik detailer & a microfibre to turn this....

i am a bit OCD with engines on my cars, my daily hack golf gti is no exeption,

i used various ways to clean my engines, but one thing i never do is use a pressure wash!!

the mk 3 was so bad u couldnt see anything what so ever and the metal had all gone white or rusty with age, it is a 1993 car afterall

absolutly all sorts matey

sandpapers, loads of dif types of degreaser, just any mad arse chemicals i could get my hands on tbh and a hell of alot of time and sore fingers, but worth it as this aint no manufactured clean that i payed someone to do or suppy machined parts etc, its a DIY job using all the OE parts from the engine, took alot of it to bits to do

need to use WD40 for bits of aluminium u degrease  inc gearbox or it will turn white, my advice is dont wast your cash on over priced brands like meguires unless your rich, theirs far better out their for alot less  :wink:


seems a shame to be removing the lump at some point to make way for a transplant

start off by using a regular sponge with regular car wash foam (whatever u use to clean your car) ring it out so its not too wet and do all the struts etc and any other bits u can where theirs no oil etc, then spray whole lot with degreaser, any brand will do, u may want to use a brush or similar to remove heavy grime at this point, might have to use more degreaser, once happy then u need to remove the degreaser, use a watering can on the gearbox area to rinse, just wipe other areas best u can, get any standing water off and run engine so it drys, spray whole lot with WD40, will protect form going bone dry and white, thats a start, will look a hell of a lot better and presentable, then u can take it further if you desire, just depends how far your willing to go..

As i said before, thats the first steps and if done right you will be rocking a presentable bay :wink:
