I admit I'm a sucker for brand names and when I read all the Shell hype there was no question what fuel I was going to put into my GTI so was wondering - what's everyone else using?
Is the V power worth the extra money? Or is it just a marketing ploy for suckers like me who'll only put the best into their GTI's

....I've exclusively used Shell Optimax > V-Power for 45,000 miles in the GTI. I believe the info they give about addititives. Also, one of my relatives was head of Shell operations in the Mediterranean and I've always felt a family loyalty.

I have used V power/Optimax since its release so probably well over 200k miles and still continue to now.

Left the garage March 1st,dealer been his usual tight self, had to fill up.....V power.
-
I always use the higher octane stuff no matter what brand.
good review

Usually I use vpower but placebo effect or not , the car definitely felt better on Tesco 99 one tank in.
Idle seemed more stable too.

Used it exclusively since I bought the GTI. In my old Boxster it gave me an additional 3mpg compared with lesser octane fuel.

Just filled up With V Power...Got a free Ferrari F430

been a bit of a naughty boy :embarassed: So far i have only run on std BP 95, i know this will not be the best for my engine but im doing a personal experiment to see if after a couple of tanks i tell the difference (pretty much the same as the link)
Already the car feels different top end from the original fuel i had when i collected the car. Even though i have no way of knowing what was in the tank the car definatly has lost some sparkle at the top of the power band. Only got 1/3rd of a tank left till i go onto a higher octane. I have heard good things about V power so i wil give that a go first.

Has anyone else seen MPG benefits on "higher" grade / octane fuel?

tesco 99 octane
same spec as V-power and a few pence cheaper aswell. check to see if your local tesco's has it as not all of them do.
-
I have been experimenting between V-Power and Tesco's 99ron and have to say the car feels a little more responsive with Tesco's stuff and I seem to get a few more miles out of a tank with it to
-
....I've heard good about Tesco fuel too but I don't want to support anything Tesco do! I'll stick to Shell.
-
i use tesco too. cant compair but tesco works and its cheaper

I found Higher Octane fuel definitely loosens up the top rev range, but I don't get any better MPG, if anything 95 Octane can make your engine slightly more economical and give you better response at low revs. (that is if you are driving for economy)
A couple of years ago EVO included a GTI on a fuel test and found that 197 hp was conservative and it was more like 212 hp with Tesco99.

....I don't understand why anyone driving for economy would buy a Mk5 GTI in the first place! In fact I know someone locally who bought a Mk5 GTI because they liked the looks and then swopped it for a Mk5 2.0 TDI for economy reasons!!
I'm suspicious of EVO's tests - Rolling Road plots are notoriously varied/unreliable and most standard GTI's don't plot 197 bhp anyway. You're not going to see a gain of 15 bhp due to 1 octane difference, are you?? V-Power is now 99 RON too and didn't exist when EVO did their tests if it was "a couple of years ago".
