Hey all.
Just wondering if anybody has the VW roofbars on their MK5 GTI..I,m about to purchase some and wondered about any issues?.(vw sales could maybe answer that one).I believe the Polo had trouble with rain coming in.
Maybe some pics would be nice too..
Cheers all.

Gulf,
I have a set of Thule's and after having gone through the rigmarole of the initial set up to fit to my last GTI and discovering they scratched the paintwork the first time I used them to carry a couple of bikes i have not been brave enough to fit them to my current GTI. On subsequent uses on my old GTI I used tape to cover up the paintwork where the rubber mounting feet met with the roof and thius seemed to prevent any further scratching - be careful with them and make sure bth the paintwork and rubber feet are spotlessly clean or tape up paintwork otherwise they will scratch especially if grit or sand get under the feet. There is a certain amount of movement in the feet and i reckon if the two surfaces are not clean the dirt is rubber into the paintwork causing it to become pitted and scratched.
The alternative is to buy the Atera Bars - I had a set of these originally but they did not fit to my satisfaction so they went back for a set of Thules which in theory are great as they are easy to take on and off once you have carried out the initial fitting (much easier system than the allen key needed for teh Atera bars).
Others on here may have had more positive experiences.

Cheers Brycem.
I had in mind the Thules. My nephew uses them on his new Polo GTI.But may not bother after reading your post. However I now know that VW do them for the MKV GTI 3 door..I used them previously on my MKIV and had no issues with them at all.In fact the did,nt look to bad on the car..
Just wondered if anyone else has used the VW ones.
Thanks again

Thought all surf dudes had VW camper vans
I know a lot of people that use Thules (on different cars - no Golfs) for carrying bikes but no mention of scratching - is it not how careful you are at fitting and removing them?
-
Ive seen someone with a tow bar on their mk 5 GTi!!!!, they should be shot by firing squad.

As for the camper vans,I know a few guys who have them,I,ve travelled to Cornwall and surfed for 2 days before they arrive..
VW want £140 for a set,I may travel to a stealers nearby that have an ED30 in the showroom with them on.Have a butchers like.
Cheers all.

Thanks Phil Mc, just picking the bullet out my head
Got a set of Thule aero roofbars, and no scratching or leaking problems, just a shame its not the track system that some cars have.
And the towbar.......... fitted a Westphalia detachable bar, genuine electrics kit and new rear underspoiler myself, a GTI makes a great towcar, pulls a trailer and racebike at 80mph no probs.
At the end of the day, GTI or not, its just a massed produced lump of steel for getting people and kit from A to B, and looks better than a Tranny van any day.

what type of bars are your theBatch?
-
hmm.. wonder if you can get them in carbon fibre
-
Mine (and my mates) are OEM VW, as well as the bike rack.
I looked at aftermarket ones but decided on VeeDub as it just looked, well, better quality.
-
I had a look in the VW website but I can't seem to access the accessories pages since they updated it - if you don't mind me asking what does a set of bars retail at? And are they easy to fit and lock etc etc
