Title: new wheels - FITMENT QUESTION
Post by: richy on 06 April 2004, 21:45
Just bought me some new wheels on ebay: Only ?310!
probbo pick em up next week.  :)

As you can see from the pic, they came off an audi tt.

I don't know the offset of the new wheels, but I reckon they'll fit on OK, as I know the audi-tt shares the golf mk4's basic chassis (I think?).  I've checked they've got the right bolt pattern and wheel/tyre dimensions ( 225/45/17 ).

Does anyone know how I can find out the offset I need for my mk4?

Rich.

i think the stub axles are common to all "Golf" cars (ie leon, a3, tt) so the actual width is no different. so the offset should be okay.

on the same note i think it was starry who had wheels off a TT and they fitted straight on.

have a nice day

Picked em up today.  One of the tyres needs replacing, but I managed to haggle him down to ?270 for the set. :)  The other tires have thousands of miles left in em.  Wheels are in good nick, only a few very minor scratches.
Gonna wait till I've lowered it before putting em on.

...golfVR6 is doing me lowering, and he recommended I get the tracking done after he's finished.  Trouble is he can only do it on the Sunday, and I'm at work all week, so I wont be able to sort the tracking till the following weekend.

Stupid question:
Why do I need to get the tracking done?

To anyone who has lowered their car:
Did you get the tracking done afterwards?

Cheers,
Rich.

the front wheels point fractionally outwards on most cars (called toe out) as this makes the steering more responsive for initial turn in. but less stable on exit.

the tracking is adjusted by the length of tie rods which go from your steering rack to the stub axles on either front wheel. if you lower your car and want to keep the same amount of toe out you need to make the tie rods shorter because:

the body of your car sits lower to the ground and the wheels are still in the same position this makes the distance between your steering rack and the  wheels slightly shorter, hence you need to shorten the tie rods.

if you don't adjust the tie rods, you will have less "toe out" and possibly even "toe in" which will make your handling bollocks

hope this helps

have a nice day
