Title: is it a gti?

is there any way of telling a gti from chassis number. have 88 cabriolet 1.8i. previous owners have insured it as gti but v5 model designation is very vague.

the vin information confirmed a ew things, worryingly though according to the sites it is a 3door camper and a cabriolet, the chassis vin on mine does not relate to an available engine.
will have to go to a vw dealer probably.
