Title: Semi wrecked mk3 16v, options?
Post by: scoobynutta on 03 March 2008, 15:35
Got a nice call yesterday from my g/f saying the fire brigade were hosing down her R reg mk3 16v gti after some utter cretin set light to our fencing which then burnt one side and the rear of her car. Half the car on the outside the paint has burnt off along with the plastics, the other side (drivers) looks ok. Basically we don't klnow what to do with the car. It is insured, but, she has a high excess and I believe the ins company would take the rest of her paid premium in the event of a claim (£500). Along with the low valuation we're bound to receive, and the loss of her no claims, we don't think going through the ins is worth it.

I'd imagine the engine/gear box etc are ok, along with everything on the drivers side, and it has full black leater seats and doorcards, although they look 'ok' I don't know if they'd be any good to anyone. What's the best plan of action, ring a scrappers or try to sell on to someone as a donor car? The nearside windows are fecked along with the windscreen and there's a bit of standing water from the brigade in the rear footwells. On top of it all the last owner STILL hasn't sent the logbook to the DVLA (3 months waiting now).I'll try and get some pics later.

Strip and sell parts seems to be the best option.
Dont think anybody would want it as a project as its going to be at least a grand for a respray plus the side glass and windscreen!

You can probably get 400 for the engine, another 300/400 for the leather interior etc. etc.

If this was later in the year I'd give you £600 for the whole car and take it off your hands.

Is it 'legally' yours to break without the V5?

V5 is not proof of ownership. If he has a reciept from the last owner all is cool.

I have no idea. I have the counterpart, a receipt of sale from the previous owner, have mailed the guy several times to send on the details and contacted DVLA. I can either send on the logbook when he can be finally arsed to send it to me, or I can wheel the car out onto the road when its picked clean and he can be responsible for it.

If the interior isn't black, it is now.

Mater that is a crying shame some people out there dont deserve to live.

re scrapping the car you can notdo this now unless you have a full logbok the green slip will not do. best thing would be to send off the slip to the dvla yourself as that is proof of ownership and they will send you a new v5 in about a week on the green slip.

If you can I would strip it yourself as you can legally do that as you are the owner of the car.

only breaking for profit is illegal unless you have  the correct licences. ie buying the car to break it, yours has been damaged and selling the bits on to recoup your money is legal in the eyes of the enviromental agency

I agree to break it... i did with my last poorly gti and it's paid for all the mods on my current one.... you just need the space and time to strip it!

I'd probably make more money stripping it myself, I don't really have the time, space, and TBH, I just want it gone now. I'm thoroughly pissed off with it all.

Tough break, never nice to have to deal with something like that.

Good luck with the breaking/selling.

I'm in Luton. As far as I know the door cards are ok, certainly ok on the drivers side. I'd sell the interior as a whole as it's all leather. I think I might Ebay it bit by bit and let buyers strip the parts they win.

That's a sorry looking Golf.
I'd break it. But make sure you keep it covered so you don't get rain ruining those leather seats which will probably sell for a decent amount. Engine looks ok, but you might have some warped stuff on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

Unlucky there fella. Can't believe what some people are like. I'd break it in bits, more money that way. I'd be interested in the drivers window motor/mechanism if fully working mate?! Would possibly need posting tho. How much would you want for it?
