Title: Semi-detailed the Gti
Post by: 08micsta on 03 March 2008, 11:06
Hey guys

This weekend I had the Sunday free so I decided to detail the Golf. Ok... I admit. Semi detail as I didnt do any paint correction etc. I dont have a before pic or a after pic from outside. I was in a rush so just took pics inside the garage.

The info: Basics

The car was foamed down with Karcher Shampoo and left for ten minutes. This stuff is crazy. You can see the dirt slipping off the body work.

Rims:

The rims were giving a sray of Prepsol cleaner and the inside of the rims with engine cleaner. This was left on for ten minutes and worked very well. The wheels were sprayed inside and out with a high pressure washer and then buffed with a gentle cloth before the wheels had a coat of wheel polish rubbed into them.
They say the rims make the car and I figure the rims look really impressive now

Bumpers and Plastics:

Obviously all bumpers and plastics were sprayed, dried and then received treatment from a product called bumper black. Very easy to apply and works wonders in seconds. Unfortunatly I forgot to take a picture of the bumper at the back...

Exhaust:

The exhaust was treated with engine cleaner and prepsol cleaner before getting a once over with a soft cloth and lots of effort. No pics unfortunatly.

Engine Bay:

The engine which has never been cleaned was cleaned with a jetwasher and received treatment of cockpit spray on the plastics. As my mom says... Hmmm my engine smells like lavender

The paintwork:

I did no paint correction or polishing as the car really did not need it. I didnt buff the car or anything. Just dried it with a chamois. Some reflection shots:

The interior:

The interior was cleaned meticulously with a small brush and all leather etc was treated with polish. The carpets were cleaned and the sound system was abused

As you can see the paint looks pretty decent:

And then the most challenging part of the car... The grill

My dads Pajero is next. We are going on a off road holiday this weekend so it will need it. Might post it in chat nonsense if anyone is interested. That car will be a mission.....

Comments anyone?

lol

The carpets were my dads idea. We dont really use our fron door becasue of all the gates so most people come through the garage and that meant the garage needed to be made pretty. So we bought a GTi and to put the cherry on the cake the carpets just really finished it off.

And no. Its not difficult at all to keep them clean.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. I really enjoyed it. It took me 4 and a half hours...

Pretty good when you consider I didnt touch the body work until I dried the car. All cleaning was done with a high pressure washer.

lol. I could not resist poring on that site. I love that site
As I told them. In South Africa finding those clothes etc and other stuff is rather difficult. So the chamois will have to stay. Although I use the most expensive chamois I can find. Very good quality.

I will gladly do yours  Just book the flight and pay for my accomodation and all the cleaning products. P.S- I charge interest.

About the Grill. I usually just spray the grill with a high pressure washer (soap and rinse off) and then leave it alone. I dry the car off etc and polish etc and then tell my dad to drive the car around the block doing some heavy braking. Which means the water on the grill slides off wetting the front of the car again

Then leave it and open the bonnet. Dry the black surrounds and then when the grill is almost dry. Take a dry chamois and just stick your finger through every single hole
And as said about the garage. Its my dads haven and is now fitted with a Bose Idock. lol

I was going to the clay it but I was told on detailing world that if you clay the car you have to wax it or reseal the paintwork? And I didnt have any sealants etc so I didnt clat it. I will save the clay for the Pajero.

Thanks again for all the comments
