Whilst doing my daily engine check up  i found a brown cable that goes from the engine head but its not attached to anything on the other end. It finishes in a round kind of shape. Do you know what this could be? maybe oil related, cos the oil light flashes when the ignition is turned on and my oil level is full, filled it up last week.
-
Brown cable, with a ring end says earth all day long.
A photo might help people here.

The oil light normally flashes when you turn the ignition on before you start the engine, doesn't it?

It does and then obviously should go out after a second or two, does sound like an earth wire though. Pictures needed realy as me crystal ball has a bit of a miss fire today

Certainly does sound like an earth wire.

This is the "mystery wire"
-
That should most likely be connected to the carburettor, this makes sure the carb is earthed and therefore reduces the risk of the carb becoming live and then a spark being caused (not desirable for obvious reasons). This is needed as the carb is mounted on a rubber block and therefore doesn't have any other explicit earth connection.

Hit the nail right on the head. :) Certainly not a good idea to have dodgy earth's. Not only for that reason, but bad earth's are a common cause of power issues. You can gain valuable HP from fitting a decent make grounding kit.
-
so what are you saying? that i have to connect this to my carb and get a decent wire? the wire is badly peeled and worn.
-
Defo get another wire if it is worn badly, shouldn't cost much at all or if you feel like it, buy plain wire of the same grade and make it yourself
-
where do I have to connect it to then? i dnt know what part of the carb it goes into. I got a weber 32/34. any pics would help, if not edit one of my pics that shows the carb and using paint draw an arrow or circle to point out where the wire has to go.

I reckon your easiest bet, is to source another cable, of similar grade and fit new ring fittings to it. Keeping the one on the tappet cover where it is, just clean the area and then scrub the area of contact with a wire brush. The other larger ring fitting fit on top of the mounting bolt for the carb, using another nut to secure it. Just ensure all contacts are cleaned and then scrubber with a wire brush to ensure a good "connection".

It would be a good idea to go over all your grounding points and do this. :)
Here is an example of a good grounding kit that you can buy. I took the time to make mine, using decent 8 and 4 guage power cabling for sound systems.

Hope this helps. ;)

cheers buddy. i'l givi it a go at making my own wiring set.

For sure, not a problem. :) I'm sure you'll come right.

quick question. what grade is the earth cable?? what would i have to ask for in a warehouse to buy it?

Whilst doing my daily engine check up
Bloody hell. Don't think I've lifted the bonnet on my daily for about 3 months.
-
i dnt have to lift up everyday. but i just love my car.

Try get hold of some 8 gauge cabling. It's a common sized use on entry level sound systems.

The sort of owner every old Golf needs
