After a bit of an arm wrestle with the missus i've finally been 'allowed' to buy myself a gti.
I test drove one at the weekend and obviously really liked it.. i was really surprised at how sedate it was when tooddling about... and the complete change when you press the fun peddle. I honestly dont think the wife will realise there's anything special under the bonnet. I'm planning on having a lot of fun in this car and work my way up to a couple of track days.
So i've put a deposit down and order one. I should pick it up in two weeks. In dubai they only do 2 models, the entry model which is dsg, climate control and 17 inch rims.. or the top spec, which has all the bells and whistles.
I was undecided on which one to go for when i went to the dealer, but the 3 month waiting list on the top spec sealed the deal on the entry model.
so a tornedo red gti should be in my sticky little fingers next week

Hey Karl well done, and I think you've made the right decision - I ordered an Ed30 at the end of November and I'm still waiting!
-
Nice one Karl...and welcome to the forum
What is it with these Red GTI's in Dubai
-
Well done Karl! See you on the roads around the Springs in the near future!!!!!
Tornado Red - the Dubai version of white.....
-
i didnt have a great a deal of choice on the colours....
i went in expecting to order a car, talk about options etc, it wasnt quite like that.
quote" i've a ship load of cars arriving tomorrow, i've sold them all except 3. you have a choice, 1 black, 1 white, 1 red... ".
well black out here with the dust is just asking for a OCD in cleaning.. white, i was very tempted but was informed by the missus it was dull  ... and i'd kinda decided red was the best colour.
so im going to order myself an armrest from the tinternet and get an ipod adapter fitted and i'll be a very happy man.
Only bad news is the speeding fines went up on 01.03.08 from about 30 quid ago (collect as many as you want) to upto 100 quid and start getting points.... that could be an expensive hobby.

I think a radar detector is in order! Got flashed the other morning cruising into work and forgot that I was doing 140kph on SZ Road. Going to be a bit more careful in future!
There's a club over here that I've found out about - don't know how active they are but here's the link...
www.vw-club.ae
Check out EVO Middle East magazine this month - there's a hot hatch write up, driving up Jebel Hafeet. That's going to have to be done if we can get enough tornado red GTIs together!
-
i'm off to sort out the final bits of paperwork today and should collect it early next week...
One big task i've got to do it sign 60 cheques. The banks out here don't seem to ahve sorted out direct debits between different banks. So you have to give them 60 cheques and they bank one every month.. incredible.
anyway, the writers cramp will be a small price pay once my gti is sitting on my drive..
phil, have you done a track day at the autodrome yet? i think i'll run the GTI and generally get used to it and get one booked one evening before it gets crazy hot.

....k, I think you'll be in for some more arm wrestling with your lady when you need an aftermarket intercooler!!
Still, after gently pushing her into submission she might feel horney

Hi Karl
I won't be able to make it this weekend (off out of the city for an overnighter and nice drive to Dibba) but the vw-audi club i mentioned earlier in the thread are having a meet at the autodrome this weekend on 7th March.
I think they'll be sorting out some other meets at the autodrome at some point - best to get in touch with them and find out - they've got a forum on the website and list all that's going on. I don't know how you go about getting onto the track independently - I'll have to have a look as mine's nicely run in now and in need of a good thrashing...
I empathise with the 60 cheques! It's a pain in the arse and your signature goes to sh!t after the first 20! Small price to pay when you've got a nice new car ready for a play in the showroom! Good luck with the pickup, and let me know if you fancy a tornado red formation display next week....!
-
it'll be a couple of months before i do a track day.... i've got to get used to driving it for a while...its going to be abit of a change from the wrangler. and i've a 3 week only baby which is taking up quite a bit of my time as well. (in a good way).
i'll check out the local club you mentioned and see whats planned for the next few months.
Thanks for your help.

Very Very Important Person - probably a royal or something....
So i thought but then realised i dont live there...lol just jokes!....well done, seems like a VVIP is driving round in a HGP R32 Turbo??
-
lol! He could just be Lebanese - they all think they're very important over here!

woo hoo its arrived and i love it.
its got loads more features than i was expecting, so i've been busy playing with all the buttons. the mirrors pointing down when reversing, all the light menu's etc.
I'm loving the handling, we have these funny butterfly juntions out here, which are normally a pain in the ass.... but today, they've been my own personal test circuit.
the engine isn't quite as punchy as i was expecting, but i'm taking a little bit easy for the first hundred kms... i'm sure it will come into its own. I'll upload some pics, but it looks the same as everyone elses when it comes out of the showroom.
I was promised it tues (didnt arrive), then Thursday (the government car registration computers were down, yeah right)... and finally got it on saturday night. The saleswoman was a bit miffed when i ticked poor in the delivery section of the customer survey... hey ho.
First mod, an arm rest.... it was a 3month wait if i wanted a factor fitted one.

Hi Karl!
Good stuff - glad you're enjoying it! Things should loosen up nicely. I've got 7,500km on the clock now and I'm thinking about getting a remap - upto 245bhp costs about 4,400AED which looks like good value.
-
why did you go and tell me that........
i've got a run down to abu dhabi tomorrow, so that should help loosen it up a little.
-
Hehe! Enjoy, but check the speedo all the time as I've learnt not to just sit back with the stereo up with those pesky radar cameras hidden behind palm trees!
