Anyone got any ideas as to what this sound is, it gets worse the more I drive the car a bit faster shall we say and when it gets warm. It sounds like a little ticking, and as if its coming from somewhere around the top of the block.

Any help much appreciated, cheers.

Sounds like a morrocan pigmy alligator to me, nothing to worry about, it will move on when the weather warms up.

I could so see that in an advert...

So how do I fix this problem?
-
firstly, check your oil level.
-
Had you taken the car out for a run prior to the video, or just fired it up after a few days standing?
If it's been standing for a while it might need to be taken out for a run to bleed it back up - as they get older the tappets can bleed down after they've been standing for a while. T25 petrol engines sometimes sound like a right bag of spanners when you fire them up, only to sound as smooth as you like after a quick spin.
Maybe switch to a thicker grade of oil if it keeps doing this, or replace the tappets now and check the condition of the cam, if the cambelt's due.

removal ov timing belt needed . removal ov rockerbox .removal ov cam shaft and there you are there there little round things. there not to expensive unless you hav a 16v about £4-£6 each pop em out with a magnet .
timing easy if you using your old belt. put a tipex mark across your belt and face of cam and on a point on the top cover.
for crank do the same
put a neat line across the belt and the face of pully and a definition point
when fitting put all the lines in order job done for the belt .
if your guna use a new belt count how many teeth from the cam to the dizzy pully say 56teeth then lets say 24teeth to the crank ,mark the new belt the same as the old one and fit this way you cant go wrong
remove the cam by undoing the cam caps first you will need to loosen the pully. remove the cam and there they are
hope i made any drunken sense forgive me
or just use tipex ,b4 removing your belt mark your cam crank and dizzy pully . make sure there in the same place when you rebuild .
its not as hard as ive made it out to be .
all you need is the right tools. if unsure buy a manual

hmm... a broken manifold stud??
Only way is to check for any broken off studs at the back of the cylinder head
-
Well this was after it had been driven for about 20 minutes, quite hard. The cambelt was changed about 15k ago, I will try changing the oil, see if that makes any difference.
-
I'd go with the oil change personally before looking at any more serious causes. Had exactly the same on a '89 Gti 8v. Drained the oil, ran some flushing oil for 10 mins. Drained, changed the oil filter and added a good quality grade oil. Job done !!
-
just whack some engine flush in, and do what it says on the tin, tehn drain and slap some bog standard oil in.
if not then double check the noise is coming from insode the head, and not as mr blue says, a stud on the outside.
then if it is inside, as stated above, its a pretty simple job to change the tappets, but its tedious and boring if you ask me.
i've done it a couple of times without removing the cambelt completely, and i've just slacked off the cambelt, and marked up on the belt which tooth fits in which recess with some paint or tipex, then ties the belt upto the bonnet so its tight and wont slip a tooth on the bottom end.
then when putting it all together i've just made sure it doesnt slip a tooth again and lined up the camshaft by hand then voila!
pretty straight forward. make sure you release the cam bridges in the correct order though. otherwise you'll end up in a right pickle like i once did haha.

What grade of oil should I be using?
-
get volkswagens synta silver. i don't care what anyone says, its the best stuff! and not expensive either. also feel around the back of the exhaust manifold, mine made a ticking noise when it was blowing slightly.

i have a gti 8v 91reg and have a serious tapping sound from the (sounds to be the top end) engine. the cam belt was replaced 2 years ago........should i look at replacing the lifters??
i have heard that when the car is not been moving for a while it could be the problem........i had the car out of action for about 3 weeks......
any help would be appreciated
