does anyone own a gti 2.0 ( not 16v ) ?
how is it ? im after a gti mk 3 , not really that bothered if its like sh of a shovel or anythin , just that im gettin a reliable motor..
so , the " normal " gti , any good ?
thanks :undecided:
-
I have a normal 2litre GTI 8v. The one you are talking about.
And its sure a reliable car, good runner. there are a few dogs out there, so be careful what you go for.
Has the power to have a play at the lights. But not so much power you feel the fuel tank has a leak!
I get around 28mpg on it driving normally, but can go down to around 20.
0-60 in around 9/10 secs. Top speed of 128ish.
Have ABS and airbags, air con, most mod cons.
Only downfall is the handling, needs a bit of suspension adjusment.
But for the price and the general power and all round car, they are a good golf gti. Cheap, but reliable. But not the fastest.
Hope that helps

nice one thanks mate
last car i had was a bmw 318 , 115bhp , it wasnt really fast , but enough for me ..so im not lookin for out an out performance...tho a little bit is always nice
i did look at the 16v but , where i live ( spain ) they are LOADS more expensive ( cos they are all crazy and fly around as fast as they can , always , so they only want the more powerful ones..) , but im a bit older so i guess a normal 2.0 will be fine for me..
cheers for the reply

It isnt slow by any means at all. Its nippy for sure, 1st gear is lame, but 2nd and 3rd up too around 90 is alright, it just lags after about 4000rpm. But hey! Its not a bad car. And they dont have many teething problems. So al in all, you cant go wrong with one.
-
what he said in his first post /\/\/\
i have an 8v too and I love it to bits... i get average about 33mpg but managed 41mpg on a motorway run the other day
if you look about you can find a decent one - there is a for sale section and some people put theirs for sale in there
you'd be hard pressed to find anything in a mk3 variant sub 80k - but as long as the service history is good and the timing belt has been changed to schedule then you should be ok. the build quality is still good in the mk3.
mk3's come with their own little niggles... electric windows not working, stalling, rear bushes wearing and generally handling like a boat - but all cars come with stuff like that
as a budget performance old school motor with modern(ish) touches they are very good vale for money - get one!
-
nowt wrong with the 8v.... 115bhp is a lot but 40mpg is. they are well specced, have good brakes, reliable and will handle very well with simple suspension work (or comfort with standard)
oh and i prefer them to the 16v which feel you need to trash to get the extra performance.... oh and with the 8v you can drive from 10mph to 125 in 5th! and it dosent bother the car!
-
1st gear is lame, but 2nd and 3rd up too around 90 is alright,
you do 90mph in 3rd gear??

FORD = Fixed Or Repaired Daily
which in Mike's case will probably be very true!
-
GTI GUY, do you hate me? At first i thought u were joking, but you really seem to be diggin at me. WTF is your problem? lol!!!
And yeah, but it would be something i couldnt speed / crash in. Safe, cheap to run. Leaves me more money, as the insurance is 1/4 of the gti insurance.

Also check the ignition, and that it has a twin exhaust box.

I wouldnt want a polo, golf or no VAG really, i think the polos are ugly as hell, and you cant get an 05 TDI golf for 5/6grand :/
Hard choices, i just want sumfin with 50+ mpg and good insurance.
Ooooooooo i dunno.
