hi everyone,
today we have been changing my cambelt and waterpump on my 8v GTi, we're mostly sorted but, on the front of the engine block, roughly level with the alternator theres some kind of cable with a sensor going into the block, my useless dad smashed it..... can anyone tell me what it is and where i can get a replacement?
cheers!

Mines a K-Jet, I suspect yours is a Digi then, as theres no sensor on the face of my block.

some have it and others dont.

apparently all digi's should have them (it tells the ECU to retard the timing if the engine knocks/pinks). my daily does but the project doesnt - it looks like one has never been fitted to the block, perhaps the block is from another VAG car....
also if the wiring looks cracked, it can cause problems. the daily's wiring is very worn looking and pinks quite often with 95 ron fuel or if its a bit hot.

Ben if yours is a K-jet then it wouldn't have a knock sensor.... although you could fit one and use a chipped digi computer to run the injection.
When replacing the knock sensor you need to ensure it is torqued to the right setting, or it won't work. As this is an electronic sensor damaged wiring could seriously screw the reading it sends to the ECU leading to pinking and potentially detonation.
