Title: Insurance and mods
Post by: Blazing Storm on 29 February 2008, 18:32
Hi,

In people's experience which companies don't give silly prices if you're under 25 (I'm 22 at time of renewal next month) and have mods like sports exhaust and induction kit fitted?

Many thanks

Hey mate,

send me your number, i reckon we should be able to get you a good deal - those mods would make little/no difference with us.

I'm with Bell - and they're happy with the mods i've declared, I'm 22 and pay 370 with tints, suspension declared.

I was really annoyed when Saga sent me the renewal letter saying it would cost over £20 more this year when I'm older and haven't made a claim.

I'm a little unsure what to do as I got a quote for just over £340 with Tesco without mods on a policy through my dad. I can't see getting a good deal with mods as other places have quoted over £700 because of the mods. It's tempting to remove mods for the save in money I could get.

Thanks for the offer Martin, I may well contact you soon. The renewal isn't until 27th March.

Bell was expensive for me on my own policy. It's so much cheaper going through my dad's policy though. I had hoped to start gaining some NCB but for the price difference I can't see the point in having my own policy.

I didn't get my own policy for 3 years, NCB means nothing to me, makes a minimal diff afaic. I was always on my dads/my car, on his policy on a CIS any driver deal at £500 p/y.

Insurance costs in general are rising which is why you may have found your renewal has increased a little.

£340 does sound very cheap but do bear in mind that if you are taking a policy under your dads name, if you are the owner and main driver of the car then you must disclose this otherwise you may not be covered properly anyway

yeah just drop me a pm anytime and i will check it out for you.

Im did some ringing around today to see how much my own policy would be, as im on my old mans policy and due to me being 23 (24 in 3wks) when we rang Direct Line to see how much it would change buy puting some new alloys on basically said F*** off

so i got quoted £2388, ive 0 ncd and am cursed with 3 stupid bumps and scrapes which suprize suprize has f***ed me right over

anyone one suggest some comapnies that may give a resonable price?

I've done a few quotes and adding my dad as an additional driver reduced the price a bit. Best I have so far is just over £600 on my own policy with Elephant with mods declared and excess at £350. I'm hoping to get a quote from Martin soon though; just got to PM him at some stage. If I could get the price down I'd be a lot happier. It would be nice to start getting some NCB.

Direct Line don't like mods at all.

I hear ya. I'm starting a policy in MY name though with dad as additional driver. Seems to work out cheaper and some companies state it reduces the price to do so.

Brentacre want £750 TPFT with a £350 excess. Just getting a quote with Adrian Flux now. I hope you can beat them Martin.

What are the drawbacks of TPFT? Having 0 years NCB stops me getting a good price with comprehensive cover.

Adrian Flux want £611.51 TPFT with a £200 excess but I'll need to become registered keeper to take out the policy. My dad is currently the registered keeper.

so far i have been insured with adrian flux for 3 years and had no problems with them.

insurance on a modified 8v gti (cosmetic and performance) is £340 tpft but i have 6 years no claims at 23. the premium has come down every year.

they seem to charge no extra when something else gets added to the modification list (except the usual "admin" charge)

Yeah, I look forward to having some NCB. Should bring costs down nicely.

When they ask how many years you've had your licence it's the time from passing the test not from first getting provisional licence isn't it? Pretty sure it is but just want to check.

Had hoped to have heard from Martin by now. :undecided: He's obviously a bit busy at work I guess.

Insurance all sorted now. £599 through Martin with mods declared. Thanks again mate, very helpful. It's a nice feeling having my own policy knowing I can build up some NCB.

Well chuffed.
