Yesterday I went to look at MK 2 16v in oak green which is a 1990 G Reg. The car is mechanically good and the interior is like new. The only problem is the exterior, it is rusting quite badly it places like the tailgate and the nearside sill/door area where a hole is starting to appear inside the door. Overall I reckon the car needs a full repray. How much would a good respray cost. I would rather pay more to get it done right than getting a cheap cowboy job.

call it ?1500 for a pukka job?
Im gonna get a quote for mine this week sometime so ill let you know the price
-
mine was quoted at ?1500 with some body prep required including dented rear wing and rust on various parts of the car. Im so tempted to have a go myself tho ;)

Since you're getting a full respray anyway I would start looking in the local breakers yards for panels to replace the rusted ones, and get them sprayed at the same time.
That way you don't have to mess about or pay someone to fix all the rust, and you know they are solid. Just check them carefully for den't, holes and previous repairs! Most breakers will charge about ?30 for a door or alternatively you could try http://www.volks-apart.com (http://www.volks-apart.com) who charge ?60ish including VAT & postage.

Personally I think I'd walk away and find a better example. I'd always rather purchase a rust free car with a few other problems than what your looking at..........or better still, rust free and no problems ;)
Obviously it does depend on how bad the rust is...........but that one does sound bad.

Rich is right, by the time you've spent 1500 on a respray, your nearly up to the cost of a decent original 16v anyway, mine cost under 2k with no rust and 69,000 on the clock two years ago.
take your time and look around mate, there's still plenty of good ones out there. ;)
-
Have to agree with rich and mk216v, with the time and money spent doing that car up you could have looked for and found a better example.
Just a thought though, I'd be suspicious that the outside is rusty but the interior is like new, why only look after the inside ? A good clean and valet can do wonders for the inside of a car.
-
for example, 1500 quid and a train ticket to cornwall buys you this....
bit different no?

that car colour is identical to mine. looks like mine from a distance 8)

unless you can do a lot of the work yourself then its gonna cost you money.
unless the car is a bargain then walk away from it, golfs dont normally rust unless they have been looked after badly and if thats whats on the outside, whats the bits you cant see gonna be like?
