Just about to get myself a gti mkV from an independent dealer. Its an 05/05 plate DSG with no flappy paddles with just 27k on the clock- 18@ monzas RED and 6 cd in arm rest. The warranty is up in May this year. Paying £14,600 what do we reckon is this a good deal? Guess I could prolly pay VW for an extended warranty?
Now I am also considering a newer 170 bhp gti tdi dsg 07/07 £16,500 or with out DSG at around £15500 56/07, but the spec looks miserly compared to the older GTi. Plenty of VW warranty.
I cant make up my mind really. I hate giving money away on fuel but reckon with miles I actually do it wont make much difference....and the GTi is the one my heart suggests. My head is saying GT TDi for economy and also safety of warranty cover.....
At this time I am about 75 pc towards the gti and 25 pc towards the GT TDi... thoughts would be appreciated.. is suspect this being the GTi forum have no doubt which you would choose.

I drove into my local petrol forecourt and when filling up a GT TDI pulled in. I immediately knew I made the right choice. I had TDI recently as a courtesy car. I liked it but it is not the same as a GTI. BUY THE GTI! :smiley:

My friend hired a gttdi 170 this weekend... and although it looked great with the 17" wheels, twin chrome pipes, and rear tints... i have to say i was a little dissapointed! This was maybe because it was totally standard inside... so if you go down the tdi route be sure to tick the climate control, and armrest options... a must in my opinion!!
The car came with dsg, but without any paddles. How this makes the car different from a standard auto is unknown to me! If your not able to select the gear you want when you want... you ARE driving an automatic!! Excuse me if I am wrong... but i could not find anyway of manually selecting a gear. Selecting sport just gave you a few more revs to play with..
I think its quite clear which way I am heading with this.... Buy a Gti is what i would say... the chances are that any faults with the car will have been sorted by the previous owner. So do you really need crappy VW warranty??? I dont think so :nerd: :grin:

Can't comment on the TDI, but I can confirm the GTI is quite well priced as I was checking out prices prior to my Golf GTI purchase last Friday.
Mine was originally up for £16850 but they had just reduced it to £15850 and I got it for £14 + a part ex worth about £1K. Its from a Volvo / Sytner main dealer and is VW warranted until July with a 12 month Sytner warranty on top. 1 owner, he'd part exd it for their Edt 30, so I guessed he couldn't of had a bad exprience with his.
Got 6 months tax and new rubber across the front thrown in.
It also has the DSG without the paddles, but I'd had them in my 3.2 Audi A3 and not used them that much plus you can still shift change using the stick if you really want to.
I did notice the red ones seem to be a little cheaper than the others, that was also a trend with the last Civic type-r.

certainly cheaper than what i paid,
£15995 for an 05 plate 5 door gti, laser blue, dsg with no paddles, leather, satnav, 18" monzas, winter & lux pack. 26thousand miles on the clock.
It was from a main delears in darlington, 12 months warranty, 4 new tyres and new discs and pads front and back before i picked it up.

If it was me I would pay a little more and wait for a slightly newer GTi with the paddles.
Reasons being :-
1. More VW warranty left on a newer car (especially reassuring with a 2nd hand DSG - I would'nt want any problems with a DSG out of warranty :shocked:)
2. Having owned a DSG GTi with paddles I certainly would'nt want to be without them :rolleyes:

The car is in Dublin but flights are for nothing now and could collect you if your interested!!
Car still has 7 months warranty and only 24k
It's not the cheapest Gti but with the spec I think its worth it!!

....It sounds like your heart prefers the GTI and Captain Sensible prefers the TDI.
In May 2005 I test drove a DSG TDI and a manual GTI back-to-back and ordered the TDI. The next day I locked Captain Sensible screaming in the garden shed and cahnged mt order to a DSG GTI. 44,000 miles later I love this car every single day I drive her.
As someone posted in a similar thread recently: If you are driving along the road in your GTI and you see a TDI, do you wish you'd bought the TDI instead? And if you are in your TDI and you see a GTI, what will you think? :grin:
It's a bit of a no-brainer but we are extremely biassed in this forum as you have already realised!

Mark, Your car looks fantastic but your priced away up at dealer level for an 05 model albeit you have a fantastic array of extras....why are you selling? didnt you recently just buy it? How many owners has it had? I could be interested but we would need to talk sensibly about the price. I am in Glasgow so getting to Dublin would be easy enough.

just looking at the pics of mark_eire's GTI, and was wondering how come he has a silver trimmed dash section around the nav, climate etc, mines black, never seen one in silver? Just curious! :huh:

i paid 16k in october with 19k on the clock 05. just remember that your car will need its first MOT soon and also service at 30k miles if not long life. so if you make a deal be sure to get these thrown in as a freebie. :smiley:

The silver sorround is a aftermarket thing. You can buy it from VW I think as the Eos comes with it standard. Check the maintanence section under the thread I posted there. You will find lots of different interior trims etc...

Thanks all for your assistance...I have made my mind up..
After driving the 170 GTTDi today realised that I would hate to be stuck on the inside of one of these things, they are so basic (sorry GT Dudes). What a miserly array of features....even the 1.9 Match is better kitted out. It drove well though :)
Any hoo its a GTi for me! :D
Question is now which one...I can have an 06 Black with basic spec or £14.9k OR this tasty red DSG 05/05 for £14.6k Warranty up in May (if indeed it qualifies since the local VW dealer says its missed a service, now i have to check that the local garage used VW parts)......
Then there is always Mark_Eire and his fantastic example..but not sure my pennies will stretch and I have to get myself to Dublin twice...Hmmm.....
Funny when you start looking you think that these cars are easily available, then you look again and they just dont all stack up to your requirements.
So its the older, cheaper better specced DSG or the newer bare bones 06 (55) er at this time, perhaps I should wait a week or so and see what gets traded in as its the change over time?

Higher spec, older one for me, prefer to have all the toys then nothing. im paying £16995 for a 2005 diamond black 5 door, full Service history .Sat nav,6 disc and armrest,xenons,multi funtion wheel with paddles, parking sensors,winter pack. or i could get for the same money an 07 one with nowt on it for same money. Car just doesnt feel the same to me.
