Title: Ah... New clutch is slipping!
Post by: Rmachines on 25 February 2008, 17:05
Hey,  i took my gti out for a spin for the first time since the new clutch and Gbox,  My clutch is slipping, quite badly!  it pulls away ok but if i put my foot down it spins up a bit!  Also it crunches into gear a bit,  would this be adjustment rarther than the clutch?  I did clean the new clutch parts but mabey not good enough?

Any ideas?

hows the clutch cable? maybe it can be adjusted... usually theres a braket on top of the gearbox where the cable passes thru and theres a nut and bolt arrangement for tightening / loosening the cable. it could be that if it was tightened up too much the clutch isnt making proper contact and it is slipping. if that was the case, loosen off the cable adjustment a bit and it should let the clutch bite better..
p.s. im not a mechanic so if im wrong, sorry

Its an auto adjuster cable fitted on this model (Its a MK3 by the way)  Possible the adjuster has locked up but the peddle feels fine!

I fitted a new friction disk,  plate and cleaned up the fly wheel,  I fitted a new centre plate and retaining clip with that.   the old clutch was ok but i did this while the box was out.

Its possble it still had a little bit od grease on it i guess,  seems odd though.

i cant see grease affecting anything though, brakes fair enough but the clutch should exert a lot of pressure on the friction plate and its not metal so i always thought it wouldnt slip?

A contaminated clutch will slip depending on how contaminated ofcourse!  I cant see why it would be slipping!  i cleaned it all before hand and im sure its not the clutch cable

worth checking the cable isnt on its last adjustment ,you can tell if its all crunched up on the auto ones

my first guess would be that the clutch cable needs adjusted because its not sitting tight enough on the flywheel? had the same problem when i changed the clutch on my last car

Does the manual cable fit directly to the MK3?   I cant stick those auto ones, they NEVER work for me!

I guess it must be,  i just stuck it on and hoped for the best so its more than likely!
