evening anyone got ideas how to freshen bumpers back up mine look grey .
-
Temperary job you could do black to black or use silicon.
If you are looking for something a little more long term you could use forever black which is almost like plastice paint can be difficult to apply.

kiwi!! boot polish sponge thing! works a treat!

I've heard baby oil works a treat! I used Williams F1 bumper gel, from Halfords and mine came up like new!
-
I had REALLY grey bumpers when I got my 8 valve and I tried a couple of things like ArmorAll, but it didn't really do much (armorAll actually turned the small area i tested slightly brown!). The best solution I found is CarPlan Black Trim Wax, which you can buy from Wilkonsons. It is a black, wax-like liquid and I was amazed with the results. I wasn't expecting much, but it really did a good job restoring my bumpers. The first time I applied it, I did a coat on a saturday and really spent some time working it into the plastic. The next day I went over and gave it another good coat and it looked brilliant. What is best is that it lasts. I tend to just give it a really quick rub over once every couple of months just to freshen it up, but the final look isn't gloss and it looks natural, so I recommend you give it a try.

the misses works for wilkinsons so i get some stuff from there to try,i have heard peanut butter being used oily apparently any try this .

Black WOW is expensive (£18 from elite car care) but is supposed to be amazing. I may invest in some for the summer - I'll post up the results.

Trust me it will not bet the heat gun unless you do the heat gun first then use a back to black to make it super!!
-
im confused as to how a heat gun works? surely it just melts the bumper slightly, is that the idea?

Yup.
I wouldn't risk it. I'd prob start daydreaming, look down, and find my trim forming a puddle on the tarmac.
-
ive been told that the heat gun does it by bringing the solvents in the plastic to the surface
looks good but a bit of a pain to do (i thought it was but it was a few years since i did it and it was a corsa and it wasnt mine so got bored)
-
Kiwi! quick, easy, cheap!
-
You move it around quickly, it works by (gets a bit techy here) but transering energy in to the plastic molicules which makes them move about bring differant ones to the surface. It is really easy and you wont have the time to get bourd you will be moving along at a nice pace! You will be pived you did not do it sooner!!!!!!!!

ssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kiwi wears out quicker than the heat guns effect does, so this means no excuse to spend time with the car. I mean why would you want to reduce the amount of time you spend working on your car?

but you are right kiwi boot polish i used a shoe brush to put it on to and it is the best black! you can wash it and clean it roll it through mud and they still stay black!!! use the proper boot polish though not the kiwck fix stuff!!

linseed oil, end of.

I would rather spend my time DRIVING mine, than rubbing it with oil!!!! its not made of wood!!LOL
-
linseed oil, end of.
Tell us more....
-
i use good old fashinoed boot polish, little round tin, good cotton rag, and a buffing brush.
get a lighter, light up the boot polish(turns it liquid pretty quickly) cover the top to put the flames out, then start applying, does take time, and you will probs wanna give the bumper an application with a brush then a cloth, and if your really anal like me, then youll mask up all the painwork thats close to the trip to avoid getting black on it(major pain with a white car!)
once its all rubbed in(2 coats does me fine) then get the buffing brush, and buff away, gives it a nice(but not over the top) shine, and last for fooking ages! plus makes the water bead like mad and looks cool!
-
I have used Kiwi shoe polish and its the nuts.
A few months ago i got a bottle of linseed oil from homebase and goto say it really does bring out the black....lasts ages and a bottle will last you for more than a year!
-
linseed oil, used on cricket bats and used on other woods, think its a nourishment treatment. from b&q, £2.99, 2 coats took me half an hour, and 3 months later plastics are still black. used on bumpers, sill covers, scuttle, etc.
best thing iv used, and i hate washing my car
-
can linseed be used on interior blacks also?
-
i wouldnt. only for the fact it smells so bad!
seriously awesome stuff though
-
coal dust or charcoal.
just thought i'd add to the random suggestions.
seriously tho'.. KIWI SCUFF COAT.
-
seriously tho'.. KIWI SCUFF COAT.
why pay KIWI money when you can get Morrisons shoe scuff polish that does the same but only costs 85p a bottle.
lasts about 5 or 6 cars-worth of applications aswell
mine were last done about 9 months ago and the plastics are still black, except the rear bumper has faded slightly.
-
the only true lasting way is the heat gun i would of said but i haven't risked it (yet)...but does the linseed leave the water stains like the polish tricks...then fade where the water regularly sits?
-
will someone dig a few quid out their pockets and try the linseed oil!
no matey, does not streak, and as yet has not turned back to grey!
-
ive got a spare arch in me gargage so i'll give a few of these suggestions a go and post back on monday :)
-
its the longer haul and the water sitting on the treated arch and bumper i'm interested in...alternative i suppose is brand new but then the fitments are usually off aint they?
-
The water will sit on the back bumper..
if you do a quick wipe (bumper with black polish) it will leave a bit of a streak and leave ur cloth with sme polish...
if you do a quick wipe (oil) it doesnt leave any streak/dry marks etc
-
I trend to use autoglyms silicone spray.. does quite good job, not permanent but does last a while... and is really easy to apply, takes no time.. I use it on everything plastic and the dash !
-
used kiwi sponge job today. my rear bumper was sooo gray has gone black but went on abit streaky .thinks :undecided: it needs another coat now its dried in .put it on the girlfriends corsa and went on great and looks well. expensive thou and i bet theres not alot left in the bottle
-
guys just use peanut butter, works a treat!
so far i have done my wing mirrors and my front too arches (when the weather is a bit warmer ill do the rest! :P)
just clean and dry the plastic, whach on the peanut butter (i used my hand) and then leave for 15 mins, i wiped it off with a tea towel, you notice the difference straight away :D

It does not have to be Kiwi, and 1 bottle is about £1 and you can get at least 2 coats out of 1 bottle. So first time you should use 1 bottle (both coats) then every... ohhhhh year or so apply another coat

That's because it's the same as using an oil, bit of a waste imo....
I would rather have a peanut butter and jam sandwich while applying the Kiwi

I use that Kiwi sponge applicator thing. Works really well on my bumpers, but I'm finding my side plastics, the ones on the doors, aren't coming out as well. I'm lank keen to give the oils a go. With the weather being constantly hot and sunny here, will have to see what works best. :)

HAHA...mint - catch you on MSN then. ;) Sorry for the Off-topic guys! :)
-
back on this topic, im gonna try the heat gun tomorrow, ill get some piccys up if i melt anythin
-
I've just been polishing with boot polish and its seeming to rebuild it :)
Just need to keep at it for a bit, heat guns can wreck the texture of the bumper!
-
Just use the cheapest cooking oil from the supermarket- all you have to do is replace the oils that have dried out from the plastic over the years- the veg oil soaks in, and give it 2 or 3 coats and it stays black for ever (nearly)
Heat guns are pointless and risky...burnt paint anyone?
-
i can assure ya that a heat gun dont burn the paint, i used one to try and removed those stooopid silver trims foils and the paint was absolutely fine :) just incase anyone was wondering

Thanks

Nope... Doh !! The back one was fairly faded, only normally stays black for few days after normal blacking, the rest were ok... So will let ya know. Car did have an nasty smell about it this morning though !!!
-
Ah k.
Yea, can imagine. I'm lank keen to try out the linseed oil. :) It sucks here, 'cos the plastic does get a good bit of sun each day.
-
good lads, try it and never go back!
-
ok so tried the heat gun yesterday and OMG  !!
you can literally see the bumpers/trims go black before your eyes, absolutely amazing!! i aint tried the linseed oil yet but i think that with the heat gun being free (jst a bit of elecy), quick and hassle free from oils etc!
id recommend everyone to use it, just be careful not to touch the bumpers for a bit after ;)
-
is it really that easy... after the linseed oil at the weekend, and all the rain we've had last two days, my bumpers are now looking quite streaky.. although I haven't washed it yet.. I'll give it another go at weekend if weather permits
-
yeh honestly its reaaaly that easy! i couldnt believe my eyes!! try it for sure
-
I F**KING told you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Glad to see some one Listen to what i say!!!! I bet people will carry on rubing there cars with oil thinking "why does this not work!" by all means put oil on but after you have used the heat gun it makes them like new!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
i need a heat gun... we are talking about the paint stripper heat guns yeah ?
-
thats strange with the linseed. never had it streak before
im going to try the heat gun. but im taking the plastics off
-
no need to take them off trust, unless your paint job is crappy then you'll have no worries..my bumper had been resprayed poorly and it didnt do it any good but the vw standard job coped perfectly well with the heat gun on full wack :)
-
oh and hammond you a leg-end, cant thank you enough for the heat gun info :D nice one fella, guna oil mine up now to try and hold the colour for a while longer :)
