am i right in thinking that my standard ko3 turbo is the crappest of the lot. then the ko3s is exactly the same but holds its boost for longer, then the ko4 is the big boy but requires further mods to fit? when would i be expecting my ko3 to pop? the car is remapped and running about 1.5bar, done 76,000miles. will regular oil changes help prolong the life of the turbo. if i change it to a ko3s is it a straight swap? big job? and will i need to re tune the ecu or will the same map be fine.

its the AGU by the way. what are the risks of damaging your car if you let the turbo go when your ragging it? just worried about the high boost pressure thats all.

k04 is not the big boys .... is the hybrid k04 ones thats the big boys !

at 76K your turbo probably has at least another 80K left in it!!
regular oil changes and letting it cool down after thrashing it will help prolong its life.
for the effort of fitting either a KO3S or KO4 you just as well go hybrid - think you can get your current one upgraded with stronger internals etc.
Few peeps on UKMKIV's have done this - search for Turbo Dynamics

will the original ko3 really last till 160k when remapped? was expecting it to be dead by the time it gets to 100,000miles

might not last that long but it should easily see past 100K!!!

Mine has 115000 on the same turbo, Regular servicing- especially oil change :afro: Also dont forget to run the turbo down

I would just run yours till it dies, then replace with a k03s which is the only one that is a straight swap (other than a little fiddling with the turbo inlet pipe), unless ofcourse you want to spend big bucks on a big turbo kit.

Hi!
1.5bar is a lot of boost to be held by the KO3 turbo. If the turbo gives up the ghost it should not damage the engine, then the turbo dies they will fill the charge pipes, intercooler, bores and exhaust with all loads of oil loads mess and smoke.. nightmere job to cleanup.
Like topher says if it dies just fit with a KO3s and get the boost map changed to match the new turbo. you can run the ko3s at around 14.4psi and still get way over 210bhp. with out the risk of running lean at the top end.
