I would recommend getting the bushes etc changed - you can buy the complete kit for less than a tenner.
someone correct me if im wrong.

IS THIS BUSH THING A JOB WHICH IS EASILY DONE OR A GARAGE JOB?
-
easy job! all you need is pliers and a screwdriver, and a little time to get it right!
-
Sort out your worn bushes etc., and then re-align the shift mechanism.

You've kinda answered your own question I think in that you say you have slack in the gear lever.
If you have got slack then your not going to be able to select 5th gear as it is right over to the right and up so your not getting the movement to enable you to engage it.
As said above just buy a bush kit to rebuild what you have and that should make the gear lever nice again and rid you of the stick in custard feel you have at present.

many thanks all,Do i get this kit straight from VW or the corner shop ?
i take it the ?10 mentioned is the corner shop option.

Hi,Thanx for all the help...My girl took to a garage and they charged ?7.99 inc part from vw... phoned her back in 3 hrs all done...
Bloody nice little country garage..
It has a sweat box now,(the car not my old bird)

left to right play is also caused by the small plastic linkage arm which move the lever on the box forward and backwards.
if you look down where the speedo cable fits into the box well to the left of it you should see this little linkage bit its the smallest linkage bit on the box!!!
no longer than 3" this may be worn!
found a pic on the net see the top left white linkage arm..... this is what you need........

My 5th gear goes once the car has been driven for a fair while, usually going on the motorway just when I need it!! ::)
Still it gives me an excuse to buy the mmmmmtasty gearlinkage repair kit from MissingLinkZ: http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/ForSale/ShiftLinkage.shtml (http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/ForSale/ShiftLinkage.shtml)

that weighted shift rod looks a bit diy/blue peter.
might go and find a suitable shaped rock and zip tie it on ;D
