I wonder if anyone has seen this problem before? The engine runs fine as long as the revs stay above 1000 rpm and runs well too, once the revs dip the engine just stalls, it starts up fine, I have just had it serviced, it has new HT leads aswell. I just bought it and it had half a tank of premium unleaded (97)and it ran fine until I filled the tank up with normal unleaded (95), it then started cutting out, could this be the cause?

Might want to look at putting in new injectors. Use the Bosch part and not VAG part as they are identical, but Bosch are cheaper. Everyone thinks that injectors last forever, but they need replacing every 80-90k. When changed they can make a huge difference to the performance.
Can't see why the change in petrol would make a difference. Not even sure if it should be on 97 in the first place.

There are quite a few reasons why a 16v can stall, a main one is to clean your ISV, a cylinder that sits along the right hand side of the head near the dizzy with 1 electrical plug and 2 vac pipes. This gets clogged with oil and doesn't operate correctly. Try cleaning it with brake/carb cleaner.
On mine I had coolant temp sender to ECU problems, the TCI module (sits on top of the ECU was shorting out) the ECU pins were corroded and the CO was miles out. (not all at the same time!)
Let us know how you get on. I take it you have adjusted the idle above 1k to stop it stalling?
As Tinman said the cahnge in petrol shouldnt make your car stall but it can make a difference to performance. Run it on super unleaded 97 ron, as with 95 ron your car should and will sound like its pinking which is never good for the engine.

Like Leon said I would look at idle/CO2 settings first and then double check for air leaks on any vac pipes.
-
I'm currently having this problem! how do you go about setting the idle?

Ah, there is no idle screw on the mk3 throttle body :(
-
might be an idea if you post in the mk3 forum then!

Yeah, found this thread on a google search and didn't spot the mk2 in the title :(

Are you sure about that??..... Mk2 Gti's - valvers most definitely should always be run on premium unleaded. It even says on the filler flap.

Start with the basics, proper fuel from Shell/BP/ etc, no supermarket rubbish, and the correct triple pronged spark plugs, and a cleaned out Idle control valve...

I've got this fault and i think its one of the ISV temp sensors on the side of the head on mine because the connector has corroded and broken off.
I have never put 97 RON in mine just supermarket stuff and it runs well. Have the proper three prong plugs fitted too. pulls very well after 4.5k revs like they supposed to. but yes it does say 97 RON on the filler cap, but that sticker is now 25 years old. I'm presuming fuel got better since then? but i have read some were 10% ethenol is in petrol now :undecided:, i'm no chemist but if it aint broke

better fuel just means you can run more static advance on the dizzy which inturn gives you more go. it'll happily run on supermarket or normal unleaded with the dizzy retarded slightly
-
so you saying someone has adjusted this to run on standard unleaded? and if i fill up with 97RON i will have to adjust the dizzy?
Also it will be alot quicker as a result?
Think i need to rolling road it to see how many horses i have at the mo then fill up with the premium unleaded and retest :nerd:
Anyone already tried this?

Alot of the 16vers owners run premium due to the knocking of the piston which is when fuel is burnt either a cleanly or roughly one the big bangs can cause a knocking in the chamber which is why a knock sensor is on the 8vers to retard timing when its got stock fuel. On a 16ver you have no luxury of a knock sensor its usually all go which is why the head is more suited toward 99 Ron. Some people run advance timing all the time and sticking 99ron gives better performance, but if you stick 95 it runs badly.
You can retard the timing to run 95, but all that does is save the head from premature wear. TBF a 16ver is always going to drink fuel, but its a fools gold to think 95 is cheaper and you will get less efficiency from the block which uses more fuel in the long run. Most people will only run 95 for short periods if you can't get 99 stuff in an emergency but over time you can hear the engine knocking under load due to inferior octane levels. Either advance the dizzy or not but choose one or the other for better fuel consumptions and saving engine wear!

A cleaned out Idle control valve...
Thom, do you (as a mod! :nerd:) have a link to a guide for this - My idle is high, and I wouldn't mind knowing what to clean it with etc - Thanks!
